Delta 44 + Sonar = MIDI?

From looking at the device manager, it seems like my Delta 44 SHOULD have some sort of way to play MIDI notes. . .but I can't seem to get Sonar to recognize it. . .

. . .am I just wrong on the Delta being able to do MIDI? If not, can someone help me out on getting it to work??

The Delta has midi in and out capabilities, but no source of midi sounds. In other words, you can use it to send signals to an external sound source, but it can not play midi notes on its own.

Why not use a DXi software synth if you have nothing else.

How would I go about setting up Sonar to do this? Can I use any of the software synth's included with Sonar? Will I ever hear my beloved MIDI metronome again??

Sorry, the Delta 44 and 66 do not have a MIDI interface.

SocialOpiate, a softsynth or an external MIDI instrument are the only ways to go, unless you also have a Sound Blaster Live or Audigy or similar consumer card in your computer.

You can use either the Virtual Sound Canvas (VSC), or the Live Synth Pro - although with the Live Synth Pro you will need to have some sound fonts, and also the version supplied with Sonar is just a 30 day demo.

Check you manual, but essentially all you need to do is set up an Audio track with the DXi patched into the effects box. Then simply route the output of your midi track to the DXi.

Unfortunately this won't work for the built-in metronome. But here again you can create one measure of the midi track with the appropriate beats, then copy and paste that for the length of the song and use a DXi to play it.

Whoops, sorry. I have a Delta 1010 and assumed the 44 had the same midi in/out connections as the 1010. However, my main point was simply to convey that it has no internal midi sound source.

I never heard about optional MIDI kit for the Delta 44 / 66 (not even in the Omni Breakout box). But if he really want external MIDI connection, he will need extra card (port) handling this job My idea is about to take SB Live! card for handling MIDI job. It's cheap, plays soundfonts, and have at least one external MIDI connector optional I used to have them both (Delta 66 & SB Live!) in same machine, and they work well toghether. SB for MIDI thingee, and Delta for Audio work.

Ugh, I guess I was a bit careless there. Certainly, to use an external MIDI instrument he would have to get something else to serve as a MIDI interface -- either a consumner card with the joystick adapter, or a USB MIDI interface.

My idea is about to take SB Live! card for handling MIDI job. It's cheap, plays soundfonts, and have at least one external MIDI connector optional I used to have them both (Delta 66 & SB Live!) in same machine, and they work well toghether. SB for MIDI thingee, and Delta for Audio work.

That's probably the cheapest solution, and it's what I do as well. The only hesitation I have about recommending it is all the potential for resource conflicts. They do work well together -- once you get them working well together -- which is not always a simple thing.
