Delta 44 Question

I just upgraded my soundcard from a Soundblaster 64 PCI to a Delta 44.

I installed the 44 and followed the instructions in the manual for one of their "typical" setups, which was pretty much identical to my setup (mic through a pre-amp, into inputs 1/2). I configured the drivers exactly as shown in the manual.

Everything works, but I notice I need to turn the gain on the pre-amp up MUCH higher than I did when I used the Soundblaster.

Is this expected? Do things seem set up correctly? Did I overlook something?

P.S., I use a Mackie 1202 vlz and its pre-amps. I did some basic recording checks using an SM57.
 
In the Delta Control Panel you'll find input sensitivity switches for each input channel...you can choose between -10db, "consumer", and +4db. Adjust these such that you get the best gain structure.

Thanks Slack. All the channels are set to +4db. If I lower the settings to "consumer" or -10db would that not increase the noise level of recordings?

The Mackie is supposed to supply a +4db signal. Are there other possibilities or things to check? Thanks again.
 
Nah, that's what those switches are for. The outputs you're using on the Mackie (channel inserts?) might not be at +4....and +4/-10 levels aren't always consistant from device to device (hence the additional "consumer" setting on the Delta).
