Delta 44... Needs mic Pre's ?

just a really quick question... i've got a shure bg 4.1 mic.. which is battery powered and not phantom powered. If i am using the delta 44 for recording... will i require a micpreamp for every mic i use regardless of it needing phantom power or not ? If it will work without a pre... is that a bad practice to follow...

i suppose the question here is... does the delta 44 take care of mic pre's ?

You will need pre's. The battery in the mic is simply to power the mic itself,.. not to bring the signal up from line to mic level. The Delta 44 has no pre's... it you bought it with the Omni I/O then the Omni has them.. but the standard i/o box that comes with the Delta 44 has no pre's. (I should know.. I own one. )

ok.... so that means that to run 4 mics i'm going to need 4 preamps... which is kinda silly...

how much does a fairly good mic preamp cost ?

that leaves me with two options in my mind as i'm not too keen on having to buy 4 external mic pre's...

the omni....

or the aardvark Direct Pro 24/96.

i'd be inclinded to get the direct pro... as it has 4 ins and 6 outs...the 4 ins all have preamps. It's a neat package.. but this raises the issue...

i record my clean electric tracks using direct input from my amp...

the direct pro having no 'line ins' would mean i'd have to stick it in a port with a mic preamp in it.

is this a feasible idea ?

This is the only pros and cons i can see between the omni and the direct pro...

if i can indeed plug straight from my amp into the Direct pro, then i'd get the Direct pro.

I go straight from my POD to the Omni Studio's two inputs with Mic pres and it sounds awesome. Great control.

And yes - for every mic you want up, you have to have a separate pre for it. Are you really going to run 4 mics at once? Recording a live band or what?
