alright... I've asked this stuff before - but nothing workable as come up yet. here's my equpiment/perdicament!:

-delta 44 into computer with winXP
-Vegas 4.0
-M-Audio studiophile monitors
-reciever, used as a headphone amp
-also have a behringer mx802a mixer (crap..I try to stay away from it!)
now, as it currently is:
Patchbay/Router controls set to -
*HW OUT 1/2 set to Monitor Mixer
*HW OUT 3/4 set to WavOut 3/4

*OUT 1/2 are going to my L/R monitors. With this, I am able to control the volume of the monitors through the delta control panel.
*OUT 3/4 are going to my reciever, L/R. Then, I can use the reciever to plug headphones into - during recording. So, I can hit "mute all" in the control panel, and still have sound going out through OUT 3/4, into the headphones. Since I do NOT have a seperate control room, this is perfect because I can mute my monitors with one button click, and still hear the sound fine out of the headphones - for whoever is currently recording.

My ONLY real problem here is this:
Whatever is in the IN 1/2/3/4, CANNOT be heard in the HEADPHONES. The sound instead comes through the monitors (I assume because that is the only place where "monitor mixer" is available...and that is what it's set to. But, that does not help whoever is singing their vocals - because they have headphones on their ears, not my monitors! haha.
So I want the IN controls to be heard in the headphones, not the monitors.
This has to be able to get done with also leaving me able to control the volume of my monitors through the delta control panel. For example, right now I can only use the reciever's volume knob for headphone volume control - the output is contstant to the reciever for some reason.

IF ANYONE HAS ANYTHING TO HAVE ME TRY, I'M DOWN! hahah.

Now if that can be done, here's another thing i'd love to do..which I think should be able to happen if I can accomplish that first:
Guitarist plays along with drummer, but only the drummer gets recorded. Somehow have the drummer able to hear a click track that I provide through the computer, AND hear the guitarists guitar through his headphones....

but as I think about that some more, I think I need more INPUTS because I use all 4 for drum set of course......hmm any ideas at least? haha.

THANKS AGAIN!

I just hit the monitor button in nuendo and it routes my mic ins to my headphones. My set-up is close to yours...I can hear everything that way and just mute my 1/2 outs and the 3/4 goes to my mixer which my headphones are plugged into. So I think thats what you where lookin for. The problem is solved in the software. I have never used Vegas but I am sure there is a button called monitor...

i'm pretty sure there is no button like that..if there is - i'm lost to know where it is..i've even tried the help menu!! haha.

Mate I've read that M-Audio instruction book that came with my delta 44 and they talk about how flexible and powerful the routing options are, but I can't understand what they're going on about.

Like what the fuck does WavOut 3/4 mean? Is it fundamentally different from WavOut 1/2? And who the fuck came up with this thing called Monitor Mixer? What the hell is that? I know it works if I click it and it doesn't work if I don't, but as to why it does or doesn't I have no idea.

It's like they've got some chinese guy to translate the instructions into japanese and then hauled in some Korean to translate them back to English.

I don't regard myself as particularly thick. I have a science degree from a semi respectable university and I can drive my Yamaha mixer without any dramas, but that M Audio control panel leaves me for dead

Shackrock,
Sometimes these contol panels are a bit limited and they can't do everything you want just with "set it and leave it" action.
But don't lose hope :) , I think I can help you with this one.
It depends on what ins you're using when tracking. If you're recording your singer thru input one, in the patchbay/router window you need to select H/W in 1/2 and in the other column H/W out 3/4 because your headphone amp is connected to H/W out 3/4. So, you have to switch from "monitor mix" to H/W in 1/2 (or 3/4) depending on what inputs you're using, and then you should be able to hear your selected inputs in your H/W 3/4 output.

Good luck

Still doesntw ork! I can't hear the music from vegas if I do that, I can ONLY here the input.

seriosuly! help me! haha.

I can set HW 3/4 (routed) to HW IN 1/2, but then I can't hear anything from vegas, because in order to hear from vegas, I gotta route to WAV OUT 3/4.

route out1/2 to your headphone receiver when recording. I've lost what you were sayinghow you had everything hooked up, but I think you can switch to 1/2 outs during recording and then have it on monitor mixer and probably be able to hear everything in your h/phone amp...I dunno..

Yeh if you swap your Out1/2 to the receiver and Out 3/4 to the monitors, the headphones will hear everything and the monitors will just hear what's already been recorded. Probably doesn't solve your problem though.

If your mixer has a 'Control Room' output, you could hook your monitors up to that and route Out 1/2 back to your mixer and create a submix for both the CR and headphones.

Can your receiver help out at all? My Sony receiver has those A+B speaker switches that let you turn pairs of speakers on and off without affecting the sound thru the headphones. If your Out 1/2 was going to the receiver you could just hit one of those switches to mute the monitors.

I think the real problem is that HW Out 3/4 doesn't have the Monitor mixer option

i get all of those - but it still won't work how i desire...check this:

I have studiophiles, and I need someway to control the volumes of those bad boys easy (ok, OUT 1/2 with monitor mixer selected). I can't be going behind and moving the knob every time, on both speakers, and checking to make sure the volumes are equal! - you know? haha.

my reciever is an old 70's reciever, tube, etc. It just has my headphones hooked up to them at the moment - no other real use. The output from 3/4 is always the same to the receiver, and they reciever's volume knob controls the headphones.

so...yeah...crap. ha.

i guess one of my only options here is to find a reciever with 1/4" outs, and go through THAT to my monitors? I don't want to...ha. and I probably wont...ha.
My mixer I try to use as little as possible, it's behringer, and I don't like it. ha. I use other things for preamps, etc. as well. but I guess I could do that.. If i went though it, (mx802a), would it degrade my sound coming out of the computer at all (as opposed to going straight from hte outs to the monitors)?

thanks guys.

The Studiophiles are powered , right? You could send an unused Line Out -- Tape Out, Aux Out -- to them from the receiver via a pair of RCA-to-1/4" cables.

Or, simpler still, use the mixer. It's not that bad, it certainly won't "degrade" the sound any. Then you can use the faders to control the speaker volumes.

hmmm, ok. I guess either of those will haev to do. ha.

I DO have a line out from my reciever...hmm. So maybe I'll just set that to straight up being the output 1/2, and roll with that...however I'm not sure if I can control volumes with that line out, I think it is constant - and I'd have to put true speakers in to control the volume.
soI might be stuck using my mixer. hmmmmmmmmmmm, well thanks. I guess I know what to do at least now. ha.
holla
