Delta 1010lt VS. Delta 66+Omni Studio

I'm currently trying to make a decision between getting these two cards. The Delta 1010lt seems like I would be getting a better quality sound card with more options, while maybe the Delta 66 isn't as good. The Omni Studio does have a neat break out box that I could use to control the volume of the monitors I'll buy later on, but has no MIDI I/O ports.

I'm leaning more towards the Delta 1010lt, but to be honest I really don't like the idea of crawling under my computer to plug things in and out, so I'd really like some kind of box I can hook stuff up to....even though as a Newb I don't have much to hook up.

One thing I'm also not too sure about is if I even need MIDI I/O ports, I do plan to buy a MIDI controller, but because most can run on USB I could avoid going the MIDI route, right?

As far as what I want to do, well I'd like to get a midi controller and use it with something like Project 5, and dabble with making some trance type stuff. I want to have the most amount of control over the sounds as possible.

I'd like to know what some of you think I should go for, because I'm split between these cards on which would be most beneficial for me.
 
I just recently got the 1010lt and it's a good card, but I agree it is a pain in the ass to crawl under and repatch wires...which is why I'm going to buy another snake so I can leave it all patched up to my mixer and I won't have to crawl under there anymore. What are you recording exactly? If you're recording drums you might look more to the 1010lt because it has more inputs. If it's really important to you, you can spend the extra money and get the 1010, which is the 1010lt with the breakout box and balanced 1/4" jacks. Anyway, gotta run, good luck.

and better converters then teh 1010lt
 
With the LT, you're going to nee a mixer.

With the 66, you might get away without one, although you've still only got 2 preamps with the omni breakout box. I never understood why they only put 2 pres in that box and sold it with a 4-in card.

If it was me, I'd want the extra inputs and get the LT and a Yamhaa MG16/4 mixer. Then you can hook the mixer ins & outs to the LT cables and just leave them
 
My Vote is the 1010 and not the 1010LT

I have a 1010 and it is a rock solid soundcard without the need of crawling under to the back of your computer. It has world clock capabilities and the midi is in the front and not the back. Look at the reviews. The 1010 is owned by many people and as for AD/DA it is very good. Prices has drop considerably and you can get one a good price at online auctions like Ebay. Not to mention the cable from the breakout box to you PCI card is very thick and the PCI card in the back can take S/PDIF hookups as well. The drivers are universal from the 24/96 card to the 1010 so that is not a bad issue. It all works.

The Delta 1010lt is a lot cheaper than the regular 1010, plus I don't have a rack setup so I'd have to start one with that, (which might not be a bad idea).

I don't think I'll be doing much recording for a while, but it is something I'm interested in doing down the line, especially because I have a friend in a band and I'd really like to learn how to produce albums. But for the time being I'm just interested in learning how to make good trance music. (kinda an oxy moron for some of you ;))

I guess I could just get the 1010lt, then when I start doing more recording I could just get a cheap mixer, because I know I'll want one eventually anyway.

Does anyone know if I'll really need the MIDI in/out ports though? So far all I think I'll be using is the MIDI controller, which can run on USB or MIDI, not sure what else I'd need to use the MIDI ports.
 
If you get the thing set-up well (1010lt), you don't really need to crawl under your computer that much, unless you have a ton of outboard pre's or something, which I assume you probably don't.

I can hook up my computer in about 2 minutes, to my mixer in's and out, my one outboard pre, and my monitors, and whenever it's hooked up, I don't need to change anything.

It's got it's +'s and -'s, but I'd say it's probably the best card in it's price range that I've seen, which is fairly cheap for the amount of tracks your getting.

If you don't need the midi, then don't worry about. I have yet to use the midi or spdif, so i just leave them unhooked since they are on a seperate thing.
 
Bought the 66/OmniStudio

I went through the same decisionmaking process for my son's computer and ended up with the Omnistudio. Reasons were primarily related to the ease of use. Others have suggested a patch bay for the 1010lt, but I could not find one that really made sense for that unit that didn't drive up the price considerably. The OmniStudio works great, has the 2 pre-amps which seem to be enough for his use (if you want you can get two more with an AudioBuddy for $49), and he wasn't about to start doing MIDI so that wasn't a big deal. They've really come down in price in the last 6 weeks or so, and that clinched it for me. He had bought a Tascam US-122, which we returned. The OmniStudio is much more solid. With the 1010lt, if you don't find a patch bay that works, you're always dealing with loose wires, even if you get a snake to extend. I was just picturing him constantly tugging at these wires, separating them or even worse breaking them. Good luck.
