My drummer has decided to throw down with me on getting some recording gear. So my options for future spendage has increased x2 :)! The MOTU 24i seems awsome 24 analog inputs! WOW! but only 2 outputs :(! I'm afraid that setting up headphone mixes would be a total nightmare! And I love being able to monitor exactly what is going into the recorder. It seems I would really have to have a VERY large mixer to take advantage of it.
then there's the Delta...
8 in 8 out, 2 spdif (I would get two so 16 x 16 and x4 spdif) It seems a little more flexable having more outs, plus it's 96K, (if I ever wanted it) And having more Spdif options is a plus... and it would be about $200 cheaper. hmm... but expadability with the MOTU is a definite Plus...
but I think the inputs on the MOTU are balanced only, which is not good, I'd be recording from insert outs mostly... the bal/unbal switches on the 1010 would be very usefull... Plus I could get one sooner, and the second 1010 later...

damn... I love these decisions. I have until March to decide, He will be gone all of Feburary (trucking school nonetheless!) then we're going halfsies on a 16 channel mixer and soundcard, and I will be expanding the mic cabinet and upgrading the computer in the mean time...

and after that, we're gonna build! heh. I'm obsessed, I've started working on a scale model of the studio already, but realistically it'll be next year before we really start... for now these bare aluminum walls will have to do. It's really cold in here... What will produce the most heat? the MOTU or the Delta? :D :D

Do you really need to record 16 tracks at the same time? Your drummer must have one he11 of a set!
With the Delta(s), you'll be using preamps from a mixer, which are generally better than the "all in one" type of set up's.
I'm no expert, but I'd go with the Delta's.

yep, it's a monster kit. Timbales, Roto toms, 1 10" single headed tom, three rack toms, two floor toms, 22" Gong bass drum behind him, a percussion table, kick, snare, and about 14 cymbals! We are looking at a 18 mic set up for the kit, close micing all the toms and timbales, top and bottom snare, kick, ride, hi-hat, and overheads... overkill to say the least... but, he's one of THOSE drummers. 16 tracks is a minimum... Currently we have 9 mics on the kit and buss it to 4 channels, sounds great, but we want more options!

Do you have a link for the Delta website? I've been looking around but haven't been able to find their site.

I can vouch for the Delta's sound quality and ease of use. I have a Delta 66 and it's brilliant. I have not tried locking two or more together in the same PC, however.

Dumb question:

I've noticed that the inputs on the Delta 1010 are TRS. How do you connect your mixer to this card if your mixer only has XLR outputs?

You can get cables that are balanced TRS 1/4" on one end and XLR on the other.

Can you buy these ready made or do you have to buy the connectors and solder them yourself? I've never seen them in stores.

Ready-made. I bought some from a local music store, Monster Studio Interconnect 100 series.
