Even if you dont use Samplitude, please feel free to comment if you've had experience.

There might be too many variables to answer my question definitivly but I will throw it out any way:

I keep waffling back forth about sound cards, like a lot of people I am sure it goes between the MOTU 2408 MKII, Echo Layla, and the Delta 1010.

Delta tends to be the least expensive of the three and have read about many PC recorder who are happy w/ it.

Here is my situation: I would like to have the Delta hooked up and use its 8 analog ins and also be albe to use my ADAT XT as an xtra set of A/D converters if I ever need to record more than 8 channels at the same time. This will probably not be the case most of the time but it would nice to be able to do it.

My question is actually this- Has anyone out there used Samplitude w/ two different sound cards providing input before? Along w/ the Delta I would like to use the ADAT Edit PCR card. If so how did Samplitude perform?

My PC specs are PIII 550 Mhz 356 mgs ram windows 98 s.e.

Thanks for any info

The ADAT pci card does not like to work with other soundcards in a system. In fact, the ADAT pci card usually doesn't like to work, but that is another rant of mine. I would personally stay away from that card.

MAudio has an ADAT interface that works with the 1010 card. I am not sure if you can use the ADAT and analog functions at the same time, but you could possibly check their website to check. I will ask the studio owner at where I work to see if he is interested in selling the ADAT interface box for the 1010 card. We just don't use it at all, and don't foresee needing it, but I don't know if he has plans for it or not.

email me a reminder if I don't post here in the next few days concerning that.

There are other ADAT interfaces too that will probably work out much better than the ADAT pci card from Alesis. There will probably be a person that will come along and say that they have this card and it works fine, but I have very well documented threads in the Alesis forums detailing the problems I had with that card. You may or may not have those same problems, but for the money, do you want to chance it?

Thanks Ed

Actually I have read some of your grievences and those of many others about the ADAT PCI card. I feel VERY lucky that I have litterally had no problems w/ it. But I certainly do not doubt that it really sucked for others. I have had it for almost three years and not on single stupid thing has it done. My ADATs were a different story all together.

I think the rub w/ the Delta card is that the analogs and the digital can not work at the same time. or is that the Aardvark? I am loosing perspective here.

Anyway, I would like to keep things as cheap as possible but I might be getting pushed towards the MOTU or the Layla

Thanks again for your info

I think the MOTU would probably fit your needs a lot better, and do it with just one card.

One of the problems with using two cards at once is that you have to be able to sync the sample rate clock. I don't think you will be able to sync the ADAT card with the MAudio card. I KNOW that the ADAT card cannot run with ANY other card in a PC at the same time, and I doubt that the 1010 can sync with another soundcard unless you use an external word clock.

thats a good point, that I forgot to ask about in my post earlier,
I am sure the whole two different sample rate thing will cause troubles.

Hmmmmmm.

Why can't things just go how I want them to??!!!

By the way, thanks for the link to your Reverb rant it was very helpful.

The ADAT interface for the Delta 1010 uses all the bandwidth that the Delta 1010 has. So its a one or the other deal. 8 channels of analog or 8 of ADAT. You can also check out the RME Multiface, it would work and reputably has the best driver support for PCs. But that is also probably becuase its not as wide spread as these other companies.
