Delta 1010 or other??

Hey all,

I've decided to (I think) get something along the lines of the M-Audio Delta 1010. Here are my requirements: I would like to plug in 2 or 3 guitars, bass guitar, 2 mics and a midi keyboard. Now i dont have any preamps and therefore dont know if i will need them (depending on what i buy). Is the correlation of 1 Instrument to 1 Input Line correct? So if i get a 10 input card, i can technically hook up 10 guitars?

Please give me some suggestions such as Aardvark Q10 or Delta 1010

The 1010 is 8 analog in and 2 digital and midi in/out
It is a good choice however...very dependable gear.

Also, the RME Multiface is quite nice as well.
 
I guess each instrument COULD be only be one line in, but usually when I record guitars or basses, I like to do one line direct (through a direct box) and one line of the cabinet mic'd. I then mix the two signals to get the best sound.

The other thing you have to remember is that even though the Delta1010 says it's 10 in/out it's really 8 analogue in/out and 2 S/PDIF (digital coaxial) in/out. In other words you'd only have 8 channels with which to work (unless you have some digital equipment). I'm not sure if the Q10 is arranged the same way.

I do own a 1010, and I absolutely LOVE it. I don't know anything about the Aardvark other than I've heard people mention it before.

The Big advantage I see the Q10 having over the 1010 is that it has preamps for my instruments...since i am told i can't connect them directly to the breakout box :) What would i use for the preamps as i would need a bunch of them.

Keep the suggestions coming, i appreciate them very much

Looks awesome but I'd have to sell my kidney for one. I think the max i could afford is either a used 1010 or a Q10.

I've used a Delta 1010 for about 4 years now. It's an excellent piece of equipment IMHO.

I use a Mackie 1642 VLZ Mixer for my pre-amps. Not only gives you a sufficient number of pre-amps for the 1010, but the mixer also gives you a lot more options in a recording environment, such as headphone jacks, Control Room speakers connections with separate volume control from the Main outs, Direct Outs for Channels 1-8, etc. etc.

I don't think you can beat this combination for a price-value ratio.
 
Woah 800 for that mixer...although it looks rather awesome, can't afford it. Wish I could.

I doubt you will find 8 decent pre-amps for any less $$ than that.

Mackie does have one or two mixers smaller than the 1642 - like the 1202 and the 1402, but they only have 4 and 6 pre-amps respectively and I'm sure would still run $500 or more.
 
I guess my question would be, what is wrong with the Q10 pre amps?

Just curious and wanting more knowledge...

Actually, the Q10 preamps are pretty darn good. I've got a couple of the Q10's siblings (directpro 24/96) and they sound great. The sound is not colored by the preamps or converters, they are just quiet and clean.

The only disadvantage to the Q10 is that it only supplies phantom power to the first 4 channels. That means you can only have up to 4 condensor mics without buying any more gear (you can get little boxes to put in phantom power). Since you'd probably use dynamic mics for mic'ing the guitar cabs, and most direct boxes don't need phantom power, you'd probably be just fine.

Thanks for the Q10 Preamp review. I do have a question though, do my guitars/basses need phantom power? I am considering using 4 mics at most so that would cover the phantom power.

If you're going direct, you will need some sort of preamp/direct injection (DI) box. If you plan on mic'ing the cabinets, it depends on the mics you use.
 
Ok lets see if i got this right....

My Q10 will come with 8 ins , 4 of which will have phantom power, all of which have pre amps, 2 of which have Hi-Z inputs. Also a midi included i believe.

I have 3 mics, a bass, 4 guitars, 1 midi keyboard.
If i use 3 mics on the phantom power, and use the bass on one of the hi-z and then the 4 guitars on the remaining output, would this work?

Explanations are necessary :-)

Depending on the mic's, you may not need phantom power for them. Condenser mic's need phantom power, dynamic mic's don't.

Also, you very well might find you want to mic the guitar cabinets rather than run them direct.
 
i got my beringer mixer that has 8 pre-amps for 250. and those pre-amps are better than the mackies. so, alot better for buck. especially since mackie puts the same dang pre-amps in every freaking mixer they make. even their digital 8-bus.
 
If you're still looking at the 1010, check out the Yamaha MG16/4 or 16/6 mixers. Pres are very quiet
