Hi folks! I'm new here, but not new to the world of recording - been there for over 10 years. But I've never used a laptop for recording before, and looks like I'll be on the move a bit, so I was considering a laptop. My budget doesn't go that high, but I was looking at the Inspiron 1150. That's available with the Celeron 2.66 GHz or can be upgraded to the P4 2.66 GHz. (I was planning on adding an Indigo soundcard). What I wanted to ask you all is - would a Celeron processor do the trick? Or is the P4 really going to make that much difference? From what I know, the Celeron is just a little low on cache memory, that's all. Would it show up that much in terms of performance? I was planning to have some softsynths and Sonar running on it with Reason (not all at the same time). Oh, and can I use a normal computer to MIDI cable (like you connect to the joystick port normally on desktops)? I'm just not familiar with the Dell notebooks. Thanks for all your advice.

Don't go with the celeron!!! I've heard way to many complaints coming from owners of celeron based computers in DAW applications, and I feel you would find yourself disappointed same as all the others. From my understanding the processing power of say a 2 gHz celeron is comparable to a 1 gHz P4.

Not like there is even a 1gHz P4 but that was the analogy I had heard. If that really hold water? I don't know. I do know many have had a lack of desirable results with them though. You might want to look at this . Considering DAW work is quite demanding on the computer, it would be in ones best interest to get the best processor they can afford.

what about MIDI interface?

Thanks so much! I was wondering - what about the MIDI interface? Is there a joystick port onboard that I could take advantage of, or would I need to go for a separate interface?
Another question I had, although I don't have any info on it, is how about an AMD processor based laptop? Would that be cheaper and give better performance? Only thing is, I don't know who makes them...does Dell?
Thanks again!
