If I deinstall an unwanted library from kontakt player will it delete from the sdd drive altogether or just disappear from kontakt player ? Ive heard somewhere that disk space used can't be used again anyway ?

My understanding is when you delete data, the data remains and the OS removes a pointer to the file so it won't be accessible via normal procedures - it will appear to be gone. The file will sit there forever taking up space until/unless storage runs low or more space is needed for new storage, then new files will overwrite the deleted file.

Ok may as well leave it there on that basis . Many thanks. I guess it's a lesson in not being spontaneous when getting hold of a library . I've found strangely one or two free vsts that are as good as the next upgrade they're tempting you with . I think they cherry pick presets to showcase it . Less clutter more useable

Eh? Delete it, empty the bin, if it doesn't prompt you the delete is too big, it will be in the bin - empty the bin and it is gone and the space recovered. If it's very big, it goes straight away. It's not been a problem for a few years now. Windows 10 manages disc space pretty well. - and if you have AVG or cleensweep, which you probably ought to have, these things are a doddle. The only annoyance is that the data files can be in one place, the VSTi file somewhere else and maybe if it is kontakt, then other files in a third place. Spantini is correct - if the space is tagged as available, it will be overwritten, but with disc storage getting bigger and bigger, it's only a problem, if you skimped out on storage. If that is the case, just use one of the tools. I install loads of random libraries, fiddle with them, then zap them.

When I bought this refurbed Lenovo T510 it only had a 140G SSD (about all I could afford at the time) I have for some time had a 128G SD card in it and cut and paste any **** I want to get off the C drive but am not sure I want to or can safely get rid of. That card was about 90% stuffed a week ago so I have replaced it with a new 256G jobby. File transfer is not blindingly fast but then I am not often moving large files. Card was about 12 quid IIRC.
I have the old card stashed safely so if I ever need a file it is there.

Can I ask...I have a "Recovery Image D" on the laptop. Can I safely copy that to the card and if so, could it be of use in extremis?

Dave.

In general, yes, but remember the image needs software on your computer to stick it back. So on a mac or a pc, the OS requires those files, but also others. Its pretty similar to taking a backup of your vsti samples. The samples can be dumped to another media drive and stuck back, BUT, if your machine has a different version of the sample player itself, then putting an old library back can be very tricky. As an example, i had a garritan library on my old pc, i copied the libraries to my new mac, with the mac version of the player. One library works, the other has gone. i am not a computer expert, but tried the same thing on the operating systems of a windows system. Very similar spec. On macs, you plug in your external hard drive and Apple’s system means i have two identical macbook pros. On windows, the latest backup will not do the same thing. I tried it on the studio machine and attempted to use that recovery file on a different machine. It did not work. I suspect the experts will know how to perhaps make it work, and know what is missing, but i do not have that knowledge.

Ok thanks I'll need to figure out how to delete anyway if its hiding in various places . I have cubase ai 13 .kontakt player 7. and wherever else the library is in the regular pc places I guess

Ok deinstalled a 3gb library from kontakt player . It now shows with the option to reinstall . Has it actually come off the SDD ?
