I'm pretty happy with the tracks I've recorded for a particular song. I'm having a great old time mixing, trying out various effects on various tracks (I'm using N-track, although I doubt that matters for the purposes of this question), etc., using this first serious effort as a learning experience. But a panicky thought has crossed my mind: AM I FUCKING UP MY WAVE FILES by repeatedly doing, undoing, tweaking and adjusting stuff? Will my perfect performance be lost forever???????????

Don't worry about it when you actually undo an effects processing pass. If you chain effects it will eventually degrade your signal. This is most apparent at 16 bits but it will happen at 24 if you process the file too many times.
If you're really paranoid, just save the original and mess with a copy.

Heh, no. Unless of of course you're editing in "destructive" mode which is not the default. When you adjust the volume, silence a selection, add an effect, change the panning, etc you're not actually modifying any wave files as long as you're in non-destructive mode (you should know).

No, I'm not doing anything destructive (and I have considerable experience, so I know).

Thank you both for putting my mind at ease. I'll sleep soundly tonight -- that is, after I get to bed at 3 a.m. because I lost track of the time, obsessed with my mix........

I didn't mean "you should know" as in "don't be an idiot" .... I meant "you should know" as in, "there should be some indication that you are indeed changing the wave."

Sorry bout that :)

Slack, I understood your meaning; I was just trying to make a (weak) joke. So no offense was taken. Thanks again for your help.

actually, Slim... you should know. I don't know why you bother asking questins on these boards.. cuz you definately should already know. That goes for everyone else here, too. Except Green Hornet and dragonworks.

xoxo

Well, Camn, everything is already out there anyway -- it's just a matter of tapping into the higher consciousness of humanity and machines. The truly wise are nothing more than masters of the obvious.....aooooohhhmmmmmmmm
