Default set to mono

Whenever I start CWHS 2002, I get the following message:

DirectShow Audio
One or more sound cards does not support stereo. The default audio format has been set to mono.

I have two sounds cards. The one on the motherboard has been disabled. I have a SoundBaster 5.1 live card. I believe I get this message because it does not have stereo inputs, but does have stereo outputs. I can pan tracks to either side, so I believe everything is okay..... am I?

One thing I have discovered, if you try and fiddle with some effects with a track while is playing, CWHS 2002 goes bye-bye. This happend to anyone else?

You need to give us more details. What OS? What kind of computer/processor? How much RAM? Any other programs running in the background?

Creative's WDM drivers for 2000 and XP are basically buggy as hell and cause this error.

The drivers on the 2000/XP installation CD do not cause this problem.

512 MB Ram
AMD 1.7 gig
80 gig HD

Using the latest drivers from SB. The crash has happened with and without programs running in the background. I'm trying to figure out if any software that was run and then exited out before running CDHS may cause it (i.e. memory swatters that don't clean up after themselves once they leave, ...nasty bunch of good for nothing no-gooders). I have a suspect, MS Visual Studio .NET, (my daytime job), but no evidence as of yet..... the games afoot....

....ahhhh soooo....
didn't get the first error message about the mono drivers.....

what's the main difference between the MME-drivers and SB.... better? more stable? less beer more filling?

WDM stands for Windows Driver Model, and is the newest of the two. MME stands for something involving Multimedia, I think, I don't remember...

It's possible to get lower latency with WDM-drivers, than with MME-drivers (it's even more efficient than ASIO-drivers). I don't know the technical difference, but most soundcards has MME-drivers, but not all have WDM.

The "rule" is if WDM-drivers fail, use MME.

MME - Multimedia Extensions

MME is from the days of Windows 3.0 - very inneficient. Audio capabilities were not well thought out add-ons/patchs to Windows at that time. WDM drivers appeared with Windows 98 and NT/2000 and bypass alot of OS subroutines and talk directly to the hardware making communications much faster between the computer and the peripheral.

DO NOT use Creatives drivers - that is the source of your problems. Roll back to the drivers that came with XP.
 
Can you use soundfonts with a SB Live and Mircosoft drivers?

I don't use a Live-card any more, but I'm jus curious... ;)

Yeah, install the software from the Creative CD and then roll back to the XP drivers. I did it pleanty of times. Also, HS2002 is just like Sonar and PA9 for that matter in that you can load SF's within the program itself.
 
hey, I've been having the same problem with my SBlive and Sonar 2xl on XP. I have tried to roll back, but there's nothing to roll back to!. Everyone says, "use the driver that came with XP" well I can't find it! what do I do?
 
I just down loaded the latest drivers from Creative (SB Live 5.1). turns out when my hard drive was rebuilt, I didn't have the latest from them. The date is 03/2002 on the drivers. You can get them off the Creative website.

I'm going to try and go against conventional wisdom and use the SB WMD drivers and see what kind of trouble I can get into. The more I learn the more I'll pass on to anyone intrested...

Well, when I used the Audigy, some times the card screwed up that it was funny! :D Me and my band would just sit and listen to these weird sound it created, and laugh our asses off!

But most of the time it was a pain to deal with! AAARGH! Damn Creative Cards...

Ok, just letting of some steam... ;)

Was the card in the computer before or after you installed XP?
 
I just got the computer from dell with XP as well as the SBLive as part of the package, so I didn't install either one of them.
 
If you installed Creative Drivers yourself, you should just be able to roll back to whatever came with the computer when you bought it.
 
that's just it. I didn't install the creative driver. It was installed when I got the computer.
 
You can get them off the Creative website. If you know the card you can get the driver for it.... either that or select MME under in Options -> Audio -> Advanced. as I had heard from some where... (read above for details)

ok. You see, my problem is not that the creative driver is not installed. I just said I didn't install it. It was already installed when I got the computer. Whats missing is the Microsoft drivers I'm trying to roll back to. I have the creative driver CD, but I don't want to reinstall a driver that doesn't work.

I would try uninstalling the drivers and then pop in the XP CD when you reboot and the OS detects the card again...
 
... or you can reinstall the driver from the Device Manager. Remeber to choose "Do not Search for Drivers". Then choose the driver from the list...

Works in Windows2000.
