"How do I do it?"

Well, thats a very, very interesting story... You see, It all started, that day Mutt Lange was over at my house for tea.... We got talking about Vocals and......

Ahhh never mind.. I'll save that one for another day :D

Ok.....

Drums....

Boss DR770 for Bass and Snare... The Snare is actually 2 snares layered on top of each other...

The Cymbals and Hi Hats are all real live...

Little Trick, that is simple, but not many drum programmers do it...Have 2 tracks for your snare, and during a roll, or fill have one of the snares flam.. (in other words, make it sound like the drummer is hitting the snare with 2 sticks, but one is slightly later...

I just pasted the snare onto the second snare track, and just nudge it enough to be a little bit late....

This can be done by hand, but it's a little more involved..

You will hear this effect in the first drum fill on the song "In my head" when the " big" drums all jump in...and once again, at the end of that little drum part just before the end chorus comes back and fades out..

Guitars.... POD.. Mexi-Strat... During the chorus, there are 4 layers.. There is a lower power chord, and I pan that left, and then seperately record the same power chord, but with a slightly different guitar sound, on a different track and then pan that one right, and then I do another power chord, which is sort of a "harmony" to the first one, and then do the same thing, left and right with slightly different guitar sound...

Piano....Thats my Roland Groove Keyboard.... Nothing fancy, just a preset...

Vocals.. These were done, just though my Digi 001 Breakout box, no fancy Pre's... The mic I used was a AT4033....

How are the backing vocals done..??

Well, it's actually simpler then it sounds.... there is in all 75 Layers there, and 50 of the layers are sperately sung....

I used an SM57 for the backing vocals... (at least im pretty sure I did)

The only way to get that "airy" Def Leppard sound, is through lots and lots of layers... and I mean seperately sung, I don't mean just cutting and pasting...

I have had people tell me that I can do it with 4 layers... if anyone tells you that, tell them they are talking from there ass... It's impossible..

I have even challenged people who have told me that, and they say they will post a clip, but I have yet to hear one..

It is the fact that the singers breath is going into the mic and onto the track 50 some odd times that gives the vocals that airy sound...

No EQ, or Reverb, OR cutting and pasting will do that..

Everyones system is different.. but here is how I did it...

The higher harmony was sung 25 times all onto different tracks.... You might have to do some bouncing to achieve this...

Then I eq'd and compressed the hell out the the vocals.... I can't say exact settings on eq or compression, cause It was so long ago, and I have since done away with that vocal session...(I had to add alot of High eq and take out alot of mids to acheive "the effect") and then I bounced them all onto one track... I then compressed that track..... Then I duplicated that track, spread the 2 tracks wide... (I had to delay one by a millisecond or so.., cause it went a bit phasey)

Then the lower harmony was sung 25 times, and the exact same method was used... bit it is just down the center, it's not stereo..

Keep in mind, I was doing the vocals in a new session along with a mono bounced mix of my song just as a guide track....

So after I was done the back-up vocals, I mixed them so the fit good together, and bounced them to disk as a stereo wav. and then imported them into my actual song-session..
Then, I just moved them around, and duplicated them enough times, for all my choruses.. (The part was only actually sung once)

Other than that... thats pretty much how it was done...

Mutt Lange does a 5 part harmony for Def leppard and usually 20-30 layers for each part... So thats about 130-160 layers in total... In Def Leppards stuff... But sometimes, it's just a few... like about 100 or so...;)

Vox,
my compliments on your experience and your willingness to share it.

I think I will try it if my cpu will handle that many tracks, if not I can bounce them.

When you cut/pasted the snare onto another track, could you not just assign a delay to it and save some time? I seem to get the same effect doing it that way although I record acoustic drums.

Peace, S/R

I think it turns out more solid and clearer if you use 2 seperate snares on 2 seperate tracks...

I don't really have track constraints... (well i do, but i always get 'round them)... So I thought it was just easier, than going through the trouble of setting up a delay and applying it to the sound..

It took me like 30 seconds to do it that way... really simple... Just open up a new track, and copy and paste a snare onto it, and just move it to the place you want it..

repeat, for as many times you want the effect to happen in the song..

Easy.. just run 3 or 4 sessions.. and when done, just bounce stereo mixes of all the sessions into one final session..... Of course, you might need to drag some of those bounces around in that final session to line up, but thats simple....

and... say one of them bounces is Drums, Keys, and Bass... and you find in the end, that the bass is too loud or something.... Just go back into that session, re-mix it, and re-bounce it into the final session.... and scrap the previous "bounce" of it....

Very simple.... I can do like 500 tracks this way if i really want to.... thats the thing... Use what you have and be creative...

Anymore questions, just keep asking.. I love this shit....:)

When you say session you mean seperate projects? I work with sonar. I dont understand that exactly. (Although I beleive i may not need to worry about that cuz i have as many audio tracks as i would ever need.)

Shana,

Yeah... Seperate song files/projects.., I guess... (In Pro Tools, we call them "Sessions")

And then mix each "Project" the way you want it, and then bounce them all as stereo wav's, and then import the bounces into a new "project" all together...

Joe:)

Joe, you are my new hero. (Gidge, youre up there too)

I could use some work on my music and you explain things real clear. Check out my songs at www.javamusic.com/chanale

Please tell me what i should focus on.
I have so many new good songs on the shelf that ill put up when i finally get my shit together:)
Thanx
Shana

Ok Shana.. I will check it out tonight.. Im at work, and don't have a soundcard here...:)

Uh.... I'm part owner of this place, and I was actually my desicion to not have soundcards on the computers..

We have about 10 computers here, and we have no use for soundcards in our business, so i didn't want to fork out the $$ for all my employees listening pleasure;)

Joe

What i actually meant was that i spend a substantial amount of my 9-5 working time on the board because my boss is (to my advantage) is not too bright . Nothign to do with soundcards or self-employed surfers.
My apologies
Shana

Shana, I just tried to check out your stuff, and When I hit the "download" buttons, it tries to download the page as an html document rather than the song...
I heard one of the songs on Lo-Fi....and it was a cool song, but I won't comment until I can hear the good version to be fair...

Let me know what Im doing wrong, and I will check 'em out again... (i logged in and everything seemed ok)

I was 8.. back in 1983 ....

I was 22 (with hair) and my band played out a lot in '84. "Rock of Ages" was in the set. We pulled it off ok, but had to take it down a major third for our singer (e to c).
I liked Pyromania because it reminded me of my recording and playing holy grail - the first Boston album. High powered guitars and layered vocals.:D

Joe, Thanx for trying
The downloads usually work. Maybe try it again? Im not sure.
Thanx Shana:)

BTW, Def Leppard is my FAVORITE band ever. I bought the vault cd in highschool (this goes back like 5 yrs ago:)i know i know, im a baby) and ive listend to it a thousand times. I actually liked slang. It was eerie and moody and not typical def leppard but still familiar. I once did a cover of promises when i first started recording. I shoud put it up so you can laugh your asses off. And i saw the mtv movie which sucked of course. And I saw them live in a small acoustic even in ny about 3 yrs ago. Theyre amazing and their songs touch me every time.
ANywas, just wanted to participate.
Shana

Yeah, they are pretty much my favorite too...
I Thought Slang was bad... Although 'Work it out" is a good tune

Adrenalize is the best in my opinion..

I will try again tonight on those songs of yours...

Voxvendor,
sorry to bring back a this thread again but I just had to say a huge THANKS for the backup vocs advice. We went in (3 of us) and did about 99 total voices, with 3 harmonies. Wheeeeeeeeeeew!!!!! It sounds awesome, I'm so happy! I wish I could post it now but lots of work left, I figure the CD will be done late summer, fall. But thanks again, that had to rank up there with some of the best recording advice I've gotten yet.

See ya, S/R

Hey SR.....

No Problem.. Acually I was sad that this thread died off.. I can talk about Def Leppard's recording 24/7 :D

If your not into posting it, at least email it to me.. Im dying to hear someone elses take on the technique... you and I are the only people around here that uses tha Technique to the full effect, and I want to hear how it worked for you..

Email it to me, if thats ok..

I plan to use it !! Ill post the mp3 soon. One thing, if i can record "sound on sound" in Sonar (all in one track), should i still record each vocal on separate track?
