Mark, I won't comment on the mix cuz everyone has already said things I would say, but I really do think it's a really nice song, with a great feel, and your vocal is really effective. Kind of reminds me of Willie Nelson, that sort of casualness he has, but still very meaningful.

Your wife must have been happy (or will be happy), congratulations!

Wow what a great guitar sound, sounds like your in the room!
Really nice tones!
What unit did you use for it?

I'd say this is R&B,or soul definatly.
Really great sounding mix and vocal delivery.

Drums sound real, except for the triplets, they give it away.

Good song writing, enjoyed it very much!

Best to you,
Pete

King Elvis, thanks again sir...should have the vitamin B-3 mix up before too long. This is definitely a slowdance song.

Flash, thanks very much, and I'll keep going till they catch me!

Macle, thank you sir. The mix is borderline listenable (is that a word?) because of my poor skills in this area. That's one of the reasons I try to keep things as simple as possible...just four tracks on this one, plus the drum track. I can't imagine how you manage to make your complex mixes sound so good. If I hang around here long enough, maybe something will rub off.
My wife loves the song, and like she says concerning my other songs, "Honey, it's very good, but don't you think it would sound better with a real singer?" Of course, she's right.
So now my voice has been compared to Willie Nelson, Joe Walsh, and Capt. Beefheart...which suits me fine, and is much better than being compared to a sick duck. :D
Thank you very much for listening and commenting.

Pete, thank you very much sir. The guitar was a Strat, direct into the 1180 using the Tremolo Twin patch for rhythm and the Texas patch for lead. Very gratifying that you like the writing, that's really my main focus...trying to regain my writing chops after being dormant for so long.

I loved the vibe to this tune. But the bass was definately lacking and though the you sang the vocals very well, they sounded a bit distorted in places.

Keep up the good work, Mark!

Blessings;

CR, thanks very much my friend. I definitely need to re-do the bass...one of many weaknesses, but I'm working on it. As mentioned in an earlier post, I sang (actually more like whispered) the vocal at around 3 a.m...and it shows. I plan to do another pass when nobody's home. :D
Very glad that you dig the vibe, that's the most important thing.

I think an improvement in the bass sound would help....a crispier sound, with more attack and punch. The part is ok with me. Also some recording "trickery' like maybe an opposite panned reverb to the guitars would help to fill the mix out a tad more. As it is, the left guitar sounds like it was recorded in a bar and the 'room sound' is mono on the left with the guitar. It gives me a strange sense of space (not unlike opposite panned reverbs!! aha!! )

I'd also ditch the dbl hit HH on the beginning. Insignificant...but it's not needed.

Do the vocals have some sort of warbly effect on them? ..kinda sounds like it.

I think the "sense of space' as I alluded to earlier seems to be the failure here. Put something common among the different instruments and the vocals...

oh..drum fills are really quantized sounding...

mixmkr, thanks very much sir...what I really need is for you to take these tracks and make sense of 'em, make them cohesive.
Today I tried mic'ing my BFDR for a more real sound, but didn't do much good, so back to the drawing board.
The vocal track is indeed problematic. There's no warbling effect added, I think I have a natural warble.
I did add an egg shaker track to help fill out the rhythm, it might provide some glue. I'll repost in a day or two with what I hope are improvements.
Thanks very much for the ears and comments...I always look forward to your take, and always trust your ears.

Just my humble opinion but I think a real bass would fix most all things for this tune. Very nice. I like it.

Track Rat, that's very encouraging. I can borrow a real bass from my band's rehearsal room. It would be totally cool if that would fix this thing up.
Very glad that you dig the song!

I like the bass. :D And I'm a bassist .

This is interesting stuff. I think it can be built on, or kept in it's current stripped-down version and be just fine. I think you could experiment with some different types of percussion; tambo, shaker, wood blocks, cowbell :D (lol. Sorry, I just crack up every time I think of the Saturday Night Live skit with the cow bell).

crawdad, checked mail, very cool...thank you sir!

chessrock, very cool beans! And you're clairvoyant...I bought a couple of eggshakers and put down two tracks of 'em, they help fill out the rhythm just as you say. Luckily I don't have a cowbell. :D
Also, a friend is going to add some vitamin B-3. Once it gets together, I'll post a remix.

Thanks to all.
