Meh...
Hey all,

I've been MIA for a while but thought I'd share a track I've been working on this week. It's still a work in progress and, as usual, haven't tracked vocals yet (probably later this week).

MIX 1

MIX 2

Tight. Well mixed. Major Foo-age. I love the Foos. You major in them for college?

Love the chords and the bass note selections....the way you spread the voices in opposing directions to open up the sound...then closed the stacks. You trained, or just a natch'l?

The ninthie and sussie stuff was just right. Made musical sense.

The time-halving in the bridge...and the doubling out was super. A great use of the device.

Taste.

I love this thing.

Can't believe nobody's responded yet.

Lacks that certain polish of a pro studio and engineer, and a pro master...but damn close.

No hearing much to change! The snare could use MAYBE a bit of low end in the 200-300 range, just to beef it up a bit. It could then even come down a db or so to settle better in the mix. Tricky. Without the vox it is hard to tell how it will sit in the full mix. Butch help you mix this one? :-) Sweet tune. Love the triplet riffs, drummer that I am. Get your 'Grohl' on for the vox.

Thanks guys! I'm nowhere near professional, I've just spent a lot of time getting to know how to use the tools I have at my disposal - and I've learned a lot here over the past year too! Funny thing about this recording is, this is the first time I stopped myself from adding plug-in after plug-in and just tried to dial everything in during recording. So, before vocals, there isn't anything but a couple instances of EQ on the project. The other revelation I had this time around was to record my two main guitars with a different voicing of the same chord or a complementary chord rather than just double it to make it "bigger".

I'm glad you guys like it, I'm pretty stoked on it too. I've just about got the vocal melody cemented, so now on to tracking vocals. I may try and hit up a friend with a nice condenser to do this recording justice instead of using my SM58.

It's not too bad, but it sounds really canned. You could call this "sims and samples". Maybe you used real amps, but the guitars sound kind of thin and scratchy. It's mixed well. The layering of guitars works. I like the like proggy RUSH-like part in the middle there. Nice touch.

Okay Greg, put this in your ear-hole.

I've tweaked the guitars and uploaded a second mix (see above).

So now what's better? MIX 1 or MIX 2?
