Can anyone pls recommend a good multi effects unit for getting that retro 70's sound? The Boss and Zoom models seem to fit into my budget range, but there's so many to choose from.

I know I could go into the shop and give them all a go,but somehow when I do that, I can't seem to hear the sound properly. I also thought i'd check to see if any units are highly recommended.

I sure like my boss se-50...don't really care much for the distortions, but it's very versatile, quiet, and has plenty of parameters to tweak...the se-50 is no longer produced but you may be able to find a used one...if not, check out the se-70.

ive gott a zoom 606,and a zoom gfx8, the 606 wouldnt fit to well for what you want, the gfx8 would fit perfectly, what is your budget limit, ive seen the gfx8 sell for 200 on ebay a few times.
the gfx8 is realy a hot multi effects and its very customizable via midi link to pc. i love mine and ive said some bad things about zoom in this forum in the past but the gfx8 won me over. if i had to buy it on its presets that come from the factory i wouldnt have bought it, but my friend owns a music store and he customized about 3 patches and the possibilities with editing are unlimited not to mention the expresion pedal. and the zoom gfx8 is one of the only multi effects units ive seen that has a external distortion send and return thus allowing you to hook up a tube screamer and scream.if this is not in your budget then i would go with a johnson j-station 149 bucks. they are made for recording but they work pretty god for live use and they sound awesome, i use mine alot. good luck and have fun shopping. ive been shopping so much lately that im tired lol. god bless tim pate.

I actually should have said earlier, I will be using the fx only for studio recording. Know any much about the Boss ME-33?

Somebody said don't get a multi fx unit, and getting single pedals is much better. Is this right?

actually single pedals are realy no good for recording purposes,#1 they are realy noisy.
#2 they dont sound very good with digital recording.
here is the best thing to do go out and buy a shure sm57 mich and mich the amp youve gott into a mixer and then into your recording device, this is the best way. but if you cant turn the music up that loud then go with one of the modelers that are out there on the market, ive gott a j-station and it realy sounds nice recording. the new digitech genesis 3 i heard from some good people here that it rocks.the pods are good to. my new zoom gfx8 sounds nice and is so quiet. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1751&alid=-1 go here and listen to iceblue#52 it was recorded in sonar using my j-station by johnson and like i said they sell for 149 in musicians friend wright now. but like i said the cheapest and best route would be to mich your amp with a sm57, they sell for about a 100 bucks. anyway yo go im sure you will be happy. have fun, god bless tim pate

i didnt see you asked about boss. i tried out the gt6 when i bought my zoom and the gt6 is there flagship machine and i didnt like it it sounded whey over processed, ive found that all of the boss stuff has this sound i dont like and i thought all the zoom stuff had that as well till i tried out there gfx8 and loved it.

I have a V-Amp that I really like, same as the johnson only $10 cheaper.....comes in a carrying case with a footpedal and power supply.

Just got back from your link. Pretty good songs you got there. I think i'll go and try out the Zoom. I forgot to mention that I actually have a Zoom 505 from a while back, however it ain't got the retro soul/funk/jazz sounds, which is what i'm really after. Hopefully a more upmarket one might have those. Thanks.

Is that the full name V-amp? Or is that the manufacturer's name?

I have brought my options down to

(i) Line 6 pod
(ii) Zoom GFX-8
(iii) Johnson J station

Any advice on which of these is best for that 70's soul/funk sound please?

The full name is the V-Amp, and it's made by Behringer. Check it out, as I think there is the new edition, the V-Amp 2 out now, or something like that. They're getting good reviews, AFAIK. I don't own one, though, so that is all hearsay. I'm still using a late 1980's model ART ECC processor, and am looking for something better when I can afford it.

Yeah, sorry I didn't get back sooner. I do have the V-Amp 2 it is worth a look. You might go to MF website and check it out there, I "think" they have soundclips. If not try zzounds.

Which 70's sound are you talking about?

Tom Scholz?

Pete Townshend?

Jeff Beck?

Ted Nugent?

Peter Frampton?

Jimmy Page?

Eric Clapton?

You're talking about a decade where everyone had their own distinctive tone, unlike today's cookie-cutter Tremonti-sound-a-likes. I find it amazing that you can lump the most definitive era of unique, individual tone into just "the 70's."

Maybe you could tell us exactly what you're looking for?

I was wonderin what effects your after? For guitar I almost allways use pedals from the 60s and 70s alot of Electroharmonix stuff Big Muff,Electric Mistris flanger, Small Stone phaser, and an old tape echoplex for delay. They are a little noisy but for that 70s sound thats the only way to go.I also use a 66 Jaguar and a 69 Super Reverb amp so that has something to do with it too.I dont know how much those pedals go fer now but I got all my real cheap cause when I bought them everybody wanted digital processors and analog pedals weren't cool like they are now.Plus Ive found with newer effects you cant fuck with them like you can analog pedals.I like to put the Big Muff in the beggining of my chain you can get some crazy sounds that-a-way.If you try that with a digital effect it sounds like shit

I have a zoom 505.... it has some great effects but it is impossible to use live...

For that sound you described you need GOOD clean tones (and semi-crunch tones).

Digitech Genesis 3 $199 (way better than any Boss/Zoom or POD 2.0)
Yamaha DGStomp. dunno the current price, it's not made anymore...

the genesis 3 is nice but i wouldnt say its better than pod or j-station or zoom gfx8, the zoom is top dog that ive heard this year as far as my ears can tell, realy what it comes down to is if you can plug into some of these and hear them for yourself and see which one fits your style, basicly anyone of us can tell you which one to buy but its always the one that we have at home because that is what we did we tryed them out and bought the one that fit us best. the zoom does a realy good modeling job, it models fenders marshals mesa boogie, peavey, it does it all but for me to tell you that it is better than digitech behringer johnson or boss would not be accurate, it is better for me but i cant speak for you. so i suggest that you plug into as many of these puppys as you can and give them a test drive, they are all very good at what they do. all i know is my zoom gfx8 gives me the sounds i want live and for recording all in one neat pedal board and is very programable with its custom distortion options, and it is the quietess processor ive ever heard, ive never heard a single hum outta it. so as i said check them all out and have a good time while you do it, heck looking is half the fun. god bless tim pate.
