Howdy!

I've got an acoustic/electric Ovation Celebrity, and I'm less than impressed with it's sound...especially when I'm not plugged into an amp. Are there any decent sounding acoustic/electrics out there that sound good when they're not plugged in? I'm looking for something under $500.

Any advice?

Takamini makes great acoustic-electrics.Here a clip with a Tak on the intro. No EQ just straight into the board for this track.

Seagull, Art & Luthier, Yamaha, Epiphone, Alvarez, Takamine all make decent accoustics for under $500. Theres lots more. Go to your local (or non-local) music stores and play every accoustic you see for under $500. Hell, play the $2000+ ones as well so you have a good range of comparisson. Make sure the action is playable, the intonation is on, the neck and body feel comfortable and it sounds good. Its all about your taste, and the more you play, the more you're gonna realize what you like and what you dont like, therefore narrowing your potential purchases.
Good luck,
Todd

gotta agree with gbongo on this one.......play them all. I have an Alvarez that I played for about 13 years that I just loved and it only ran around $350. Ive moved up to a high end Martin now and I love it. Check out the low end accoustic electrics from the big names like Martin and Gibson, their low end accoustics sound better than most other brands high end guitars and run around $500. Also...I have tried some reasonably priced Taylor accoustics lately that sound fantastic.
