In my pursuit of the best method of recording live classical recitals, i have been studying the various stereo techniques and came across the decca tree. Is there a way of employing this with limited resources (can i do it with 2 omnis and a hypercardiod instead of buying another omni - 2 ECM800s + 1 Rode NT3) How far apart should the mics be in a small room (i.e. 200 seat auditorium)
Is this (+ another NT3 on the soloist) a good approach or should i stick with the more common X/Y or ORTF (neither of which i have been completely satisfied with)
Finally, is there a stereo mount with enough width to allow for Decca tree mounting (without spending a small fortune?) thanks!

The Decca Tree is theoretically a 100% time-delay stereo technique, so a hypercardioid NT3 won't let you do true Decca Tree stereo. Still, if you want to experiment, maybe try putting the two omni mics in a spaced-pair setup about 16" to 24" apart, with the hypercardioid facing directly forward halfway in between them. Blend the hypercardioid into the mix dead center, just enough to cover any hole that may exist in the imaging of the L/R omni mics. It's not Decca Tree, but it might provide good results.

As for a stereo mounting for that distance...not sure. It's a relatively big spacing for a single mic stand setup, and stereo bars are typically for XY or ORTF stereo.

Disclaimer: Don't blame me if the above doesn't quite work. It's just a theoretical suggestion...I've never strayed far from the ORTF you aren't completely satisfied with ;)

Disclaimer 2 (forgot this one the first time): The hypercardioid will most likely exhibit less bass response than the two omnis since it is a directional microphone, so you may have to compensate for that with light EQ if it is too obtrusive. Then again, you might be able to eliminate the hypercardiod altogether if the omni distance is small.

Thanks! I'll have to try that - i'm considering investing in a 3rd omni to fill out the array... (someday, when i have $)
