"Now, I do realize there is a core group of regulars here that have become very close, and you guys always seem to find something positive about each other's music most of the time. Nothing wrong with that, but at some point you lose your ability to "tell it like it is", because as well all know too well, it's HARD to tell a close friend something negative."

Don't know about the others, but I tell it like it is. I like a lot of the people here too. I can do both things.

"When I start posting music, I will ask those that listen to it to be brutally open and honest."

There's no need to be brutally open and honest. You can often have just as big an effect with a gentle impact. I don't lie when I review stuff here - what's the point of that? But I'm not brutally honest, either - what's the use of that? Oh, hang on, I *have* been brutally honest a few times - when I really, REALLY like something here, I let the person know.

"You see, if you guys think it sucks, it won't hurt my feelings because you're just ascii text on the screen."

The people here are way more than letters on a screen - they're people, representing themselves with messages on a screen. I've got a very real sense of very real people behind these messages. People here move me, and I care about them and I care about what they feel and think and do.

Spot on, Dobro! Now stop responding please, I agree with you too much ;)

Hey just checkin in on this again, because I fear my last post may have read like an outburst. But guys like Muzeman, Pedullist, and Dobro have since said in very clear terms exactly what I was trying to say.

And it's music, not politics.
The focus is music...

music...

music...

Some of us dissapear in it. It's hard to do that when you're also worrying about what others are going to think.

Man--being "brutal" is not a behavior of any quality musician/artist I've ever met. Honest, yes. The tradition here is to be honest but not an asshole.

OK. So I listen to a genre (submit your own) that I don't care for. I send my review: THAT SUCKS!

What have I done? Nothing constructive, nothing objective and nothing to contribute one iota to the person posting.

This forum is not about dictating personal tastes to the world. Its about finding ways to help each other get better. If I don't like the song, I just comment on the recording. Hell, there are lots of major label artists that I don't care for, so my opinion of the composition in such a case is not going to be a factor in my post. I'm probably the most "brutal" to those who show the most signs of greatness, but my only intention is to help them be better. In that case, I state my opinions and suggestions in great detail, so the person sees where I am coming from. I give the kinds of critiques I WISH I would have been given when I was trying to figure this stuff out.

Oh, and--I'm still tryin got figure out a lot of stuff myself!:D Maybe I suck? :D

Dude,if you suck there's no hope for the rest of us!
Your da best we got!:D

It's music man...........

I think I suck at this stuff but it gives me incredible joy....

I seem to have had the pleasure of brightening another's day as well.......

It's music man....

My philosophy is to treat others the way I would want to be treated. I would always want someone to tell me if they hated anything about my music. I give my opinion freely but always try to comment objectively as well.

Everyone is different, it's rediculous to tell people 'what the forum is for' because they will continue to use it how they do. This is not a professional enviroment and the people who post music do not expect that.

I think sometimes people take their music (and the music of others) way too seriously. Sad because that takes the fun out of it.

How can you say that? Did you forget about maggy south & cheesyrecipe?

My bad,I forgot all about little Maggy,I kinda miss her!:D

Wow this is a great post. I suppose this a couple of these statements apply to me as well. First would be definately to get critiques on my mixdowns. For I as well as all of you have achieved a mix that was pleasing to my ears, only to listen later, as you all, and of course it sounds like crap. I, as extremely impatient as I am, I like to find out if I am at least on the right course to make the music sound as best as it possibly can.

Anyway, Im at work write more later.

I want hits to my band's website!!! ROyaltIeS!

Ima gonna be rich!! RICH I TELL YA!!!

Hi Pedullist,

Thank you for your comments. You are indeed correct, real comments can be made with more tact and I will try to address that. Ascii text via the internet has no emotion and sometimes it can come across much harsher than intended. Thank you for pointing that out to me. :)

Hi dobro,

"The people here are way more than letters on a screen - they're people, representing themselves with messages on a screen. I've got a very real sense of very real people behind these messages. People here move me, and I care about them and I care about what they feel and think and do."

Very true. I guess it all depends on what you're goals are from this site and your music. I have close friends that find it very difficult to "tell me like it is". I'm sure regulars on the forum here sometimes find it difficult to tell another regular forum user anything negative about their music. But, like Pedullist said you can be honest without being brutal. :)

Again I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts on this subject. Extememly informative and interesting. I still plan on being open and honest with my reviews/thoughts on other user's music. But I will keep in mind the person on the recieving end is indeed more than just "ascii text".

Thanks for the eye opener.

You've got an admirable attitude, Homeuser! (admitting you might have been wrong about something isn't very common behaviour on messageboards)

Very good!

Pedullist...I wanna know why you shaved off your left eyebrow:eek:

(and you'll probably ask why I look like a dog and bleed from the mouth!!)

I didn't shave off my eyebrow, Mixmkr....I removed my left eye! :D

would I, would I?? (wood eye, wood eye).... hare lip, hare lip!!!

it was an old joke...sorry...:D

About 3149 posts ago?

I have no idea what you're talking about, I'm a newbie...:D

I read a post earlier here that talked about the "lack of ego" from the cats on this forum. That hits the nail on the head. Every city or town has those musicians that are FULL OF EGO, you know the ones...go down to the guitar store on Saturday and you will see them. Anyway, I am a home recordist and amature song writer, thats all I will ever be. I spent years listening to and critiqueing my own stuff but your ears get numb to your own mistakes after a while. I respect and trust the folks who post and comment on this forum. I know that they will let me know what is good and what is not. This is not a place to masturbate your own ego, because I have seen guys come on here before and try to do that and they are quickly put in their place. The folks on here are experienced in what I do. Writing, recording, mixing and mastering in the living room, the bedroom, the garage...wherever. I thank God for this forum and the people on it.

Mike

True all that! I would actually rather hear negative comments about my mix downs in this forum. Thats what it's all about for me is checking my progress and constantly improving. However, I also hope that people that have put in their 2 cents in the past, give a listen again sometime in the future, and maybe give a couple more cents to see if they see any improvement. And actually it really doesn't matter the caliber of the replyee, I think it really depends on what they listen to your link through! I just rely on my monitors and go from there. I do keep all comments and critisizms in mind as I practice techniques as well.
