They asked me too much question.

I answered 'em correct & wisely.

They thought I was good.

I kept telling 'em to make the best outta what they got.

They thought I was great.

I kept telling 'em everything thay want to know about Homerecording.

They thought I was God.

Until the day they asked me they wanted to hear my songs...

I said I didn't have any webspace to host mp3.

But they kept pushing me...

They didn't believe me I wasn't that great.

And then Waldo came up with the whole idea...

What can I say ?

:D

I can't add much to what's already been said. In fact just about the only thing I can't agree with is SLuiCe's statement.

It was sarcasm.

Don't confuse the options in the poll. They aren't referring to why we MAKE music, but why we are posting the music for other people to listen.

Why we make music, why we share music. Whatever. The point is you give me the impression that you think everyone does it for money...or fame. I'm 29 and I have a day job as a builder, and in between climbing across 5 inch beams 30 feet in the air and bandaging up whatever part of me happens to be bleeding at the moment, I occasional have the time to record a melody onto a mini casstte in the truck. What I don't have much of is time to think about who will like my music and who won't or will it sell more albums than Britney. My point is, and has already been made by others since my post and before it, most of the people here as far as I can tell do it because they love music, learn from others' music and ideas, and want to share their own.

I will never be famous, you will probably not be famous, and I've already got the girl. So fuck it. I record music and share it with you guys and hopefully you will share your honest opinions and help me grow.

Although I'm a technerd working at a big company in the Netherlands, SLuiCe is telling my story. And I'm 29 too. I'm his dutch twin brother.... :D

Making music without the need of making it big is hard to understand for most people, I've noticed. Ever heard of the term 'hobby'?

Yikes! Another Hothead here, like me!

I dont think anyone is challenging you, brother, I think they are just talkin. I have heard your stuff, I love it, you are very talented. As I was reading this, I thought I was reading one of my drunken posts, but the name wasnt right:D

You do great stuff. I have enjoyed your music. I think you took some of the comments the wrong way.

Bach didnt make it "Big" until he was dead for 90 years. I am a pro player, but I spent the last two weeks in a pit, playing for the Opera. Holy Shit did that suck ( Paid Good)

Is the girl cute?:D :D :D :D

All I can say, if any of you get 'famous', make sure you remember me, and send the odd groupy my way...

Don't knock opera when I'm around, DavidK ;)

I must admit: I have a feeling Homeuser finds it hard to believe we do it just for fun and to improve ourselves. What the heck, let's get personal:

Homeuser, do you find it hard to believe that?

Sometimes I get the feeling you're not here to find something beautiful in the music people post or to motivate people. Your comments can be pretty harsh. Plus, I never heard your music. Could you be so kind to tell us why you are here? :)

haha...no no. I wasn't talking to everyone, just homeuser. LOL. And I didn't mean it to sound hot headed. It just all kinda spils out sometimes. :)

Everyone know the fact. My songs are killer & powerfull.

Everytime I post my song, NowhereRadio Server goes down. So the point is I only post to kick it down when I didn't hear any good stuff around there for long time....

Well I didn't have time to read all the very colerful, I'm sure, replies (today) but I need to add my spinn to this thing.

I loooove to record. I have been addicted to this site because it's a far better thing to do between writing, tracking and mixing my music than say TV or games that will suck my will to live.
It seems to be the greatest thing that we all from various socioeconomic groups and varying levels of education can all post our creations here to be naked to our true peers. Somewhere tonight a lawer from texas listens to music made by a 14 year old kid with a Boss multi-digi gizmo while he rests and resets his ears after a long mix session on his hobby recording project.

Most of us come here to escape repitition and radio.
I rarely even buy (or download) commercial music anymore.

So while I have an ego (as does any self aware individual) and I like to hear it if people dig my music I would have to answer with the last option because it really is a cool hobby to have and the internet just adds a dimension to the experience.

Thank you all for being here.

Everyone...

I'm gonna cry

I like commenting on peoples stuff, and seeing how my comments compare with what other people think.

I also like posting stuff...just to get the general opinion (which I realize is coming from other musicians). There is a wide variety of tastes here, and it allows for someone who may not be "hip" with the style of music you do, but free to offer comments.

I also like to post, so I can contribute and not be so one-sided with only commenting, but by at least offering a MP3, people can put a measurement on my stuff, and therefore decide if my comments are pure bullshit or have any credibility. So...when I say..."I LIKE REVERB!!"...people can possibly understand what I am saying;)

I listen to [a little bit of]NPR radio and stuff here...ONLY... screw "pop" radio. I grew out of that a long time ago. I am MUCH more interested in hearing homebrew anyway. MUCH more interesting...and I like being involved by occasionally contributing too.

I can put myself in Guernica's shoes.. I made some loot awhile back...but this is more for fun now. Rigging sailboats gives me a MUCH bigger paycheck now...and it's steady!

jake-owa...where you thanking ME too!!:p

First off, I HAVE to write songs. Its just something ingrained in me. Writing is always a process of self discovery and therapy to some degree, as well as an addictive activity. Discovering a song through the process of creating is what I really enjoy.

OK. So I get all these songs and I naturally start recording demos. The demo is really an attempt to see if my vision of what its gonna sound like is accurate or not. There is that trying to strive for that holy grail recording too.

Well, pretty soon all this stuff starts to pile up and I start to wonder how this song or that might be viewed by other people. When I do post, the feedback I get is always helpful. It might be recording related, in which case I can sure use the fresh ears on the mix.

When its song feedback, it helps me in two ways. First, I can get a bead on the quality or lack of quality in the tune itself. Second, it helps me see if the song is on an emotional wavelength that rings true with others or not.

Thats why I post. I may pitch some of these songs to publishers at some point in the future. Believe it or not, if you play a tune for about ten people, you have a pretty good idea where it falls on a scale of 1 to 10.

"I must admit: I have a feeling Homeuser finds it hard to believe we do it just for fun and to improve ourselves. What the heck, let's get personal: Homeuser, do you find it hard to believe that?"

Obviously at first I did. I'm still kind of surprised by how many are just doing this for fun, but that's cool! What I STILL find confusing is the attitude of "I don't care if anyone likes it or not." Well, unless you're working on a mix, why even upload it then?

"Sometimes I get the feeling you're not here to find something beautiful in the music people post or to motivate people. Your comments can be pretty harsh."

You're basically correct. I want the musician/composer of the tune I'm listening to, to know EXACTLY how it made me feel or react. I'm not here to search for something positive or negative to say. But if I'm going to take the time to listen to their tune, it's only fair that they get my honest open feelings. There are many advantages to posting music to a bunch of "strangers" to listen to. Since they are not friends or family, you EXPECT to get REAL comments, good or bad. This I think is one of the most powerfull aspects of this forum.

Now, I do realize there is a core group of regulars here that have become very close, and you guys always seem to find something positive about each other's music most of the time. Nothing wrong with that, but at some point you lose your ability to "tell it like it is", because as well all know too well, it's HARD to tell a close friend something negative. :)

When I start posting music, I will ask those that listen to it to be brutally open and honest. You see, if you guys think it sucks, it won't hurt my feelings because you're just ascii text on the screen. :) Now if I could put a face and a beer with that bad review, it might be a tad more personal. :) Everyone around me in my everyday life always says something positive and motivational about my music. BS, I want real comments. And hopefully this is the place to get it. :)

"Plus, I never heard your music. Could you be so kind to tell us why you are here? "

To enjoy the fact that I can participate in forum disscussions about topics that interest me. I'm also here because I am in the process of creating the best self produced home indie CD that I can and it's good to hear other musicians music to see how it compares to mine, in both song and recording quality.

OK, I can tell by your response - and use of smilies - that your intentions are good. :)

This will be a looooong post.... :D

What I STILL find confusing is the attitude of "I don't care if anyone likes it or not." Well, unless you're working on a mix, why even upload it then
I guess you got me there....because we secretly do care about it (but we are afraid to admit it ; ). I find it very unlikely that no one cares about what others think. It's natural to care about it. It can be flattering or it can open your eyes (or more appropriately: your ears). Either kind of response is good. Sometimes you think the drumparts suck, but are hesitant whether you really should delete and redo them (it was a lot of work, you know?) A couple of responses sometimes help you to be brave enough to delete and redo them. Or keep them, because everyone seems to like them.

There are many advantages to posting music to a bunch of "strangers" to listen to. Since they are not friends or family, you EXPECT to get REAL comments, good or bad.....
......Nothing wrong with that, but at some point you lose your ability to "tell it like it is", because as well all know too well, it's HARD to tell a close friend something negative

You have a point here, yet 'REAL' doesn't mean HARSH. :) If you closely read the responses of the regulars you'll see we do give negative responses. But they're nuanced (see example below). True, we don't like to to hurt each other's feelings. Further: in order to give a nuanced response you'll have to listen more closely and question your own ears too: "OK, the vocals are a bit out of tune....but does it really matter? Doesn't it suit the specific mood and style of the music?" or "the songs seems a bit long but hey, not every musical style has to obey to the almight 3 minute rule....perhaps my expectations are wrong here".

I always listen and type a response at the same time. I often delete parts of my critique after a couple of listens. Because by listening to it a couple of times I find out it's not bad, it's different!. That's what I like about this board, it questions my ears and sense of quality. The 'rules' upon which I make and qualify my quirky popmusic don't apply to Chris's or Sluice's type of music. So I have to alter my own expectations.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example:

Please observe the difference in the following types of response:

your vocals plain suck

and

work on your vocals, especially the intonation & timing. Specifically at 2:12, and 3:24 where it's pretty bad...but it's good in the 3rd verse btw!

C'mon, admit it: the first one doesn't motivate at all. The second one is both 'telling like it is' as well as it is 'REAL', yet it motivates much more.

I think your missing the the point.
If anyone cared, they would be posting the same pop you hear on the radio.
Here,everyone posts what they like.
Everybody listens, comments, and usually finds something they enjoy in it,even if it's not their style.
That's the point.
It's a gathering of musicans, digging each others talent.
(Some of them truly great BTW.)

And most people are working on a mix,or posting the final version everyone helped them with.

A lot of people are friends sure, but we all comment honestly as far as our expertise goes.
And newcomers are always welcome,as long as they don't have an attitude problem.
The keyword here is tact,as Ped pointed out.

It's all about the music my friend!:)

Pete

I post mainly for comments on the song itself, not so much the quality of the recording.
Maybe this forum should be used mainly for commenting on recording techniques(mixing, etc.) and the songwriters forum used to comment on the song itself (it's too long, needs another verse, needs a hook, blah, blah, etc.)

"I spent the last two weeks in a pit, playing for the Opera. Holy Shit did that suck ( Paid Good)"

Okay, buy the mic now. If you don't have enough for the mic now, then back in the pit with you for another two weeks.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigaro!
