I've been recording/editing my old vinyl to the computer for a while now and have become comfortable using CakewalkPA9 for getting rid of the major pops. But zooming in on waveforms/splitting/deleting pops/combining audio/zooming out/move to the next pop is getting old. I think I've reached the point that I'm ready to enlist the help of de-clicking software. After cursory searches here, it seems a few people use Sonic Foundry for this purpose and this morning's email from Cakewalk told me that Pyro2003 also has a de-clicking tool in it as well, and as a CW customer, I can obtain it for practically nothing:D

So I'm interested in opinions on these products; in particular the Pyro (and others you might use for this application). Do they work well enough to save time in what lately has become a group of time consuming projects. Damn Gene Pitney b-sides!:D

Thanks to all who reply.....

I absolutly love "Goldwav" for my vinal/cassette to CD editing. So simple and user friendly. You can download the "demo" at www.hitsquad.com.

The demo (at least the one I nabbed a couple years back) is fully functional. The only limit on it, if I recall, is that you can only use 250 mouse clicks per opening of the program. You can edit a shit load in 250 clicks, and if you need more.... close and reopen. I like it enough that I spent the measly $25 clams or whatever. Actually its handy for adding effects and the like to wav files you record with the guitar too (re:cool edit). Take a peek!

Cool Edit Pro (very comprehensive and flexible, if you don't have a dual AMD)
DartPro XP (specialised, a bit less intuitive, if you don't need more than 16-bit)
Cedar (simply the best, if you don't care about money and have sacks of it)
DC Five (a bit of everything, including real time)
Sonic Laundry

They all have tools for what you need. They all have strenghts and weaknesses. So sometimes, one may do an excellent job and the others fail, next time it is the other way round. Check them out.

I use Cool Edit Pro for this. It works great.

Havoc,
Does CEP not work with dual AMDs?

I use a piece of shareware called "SINGULATOR", it's great, and really cheap to record the stuff then "WAVECLEAN" to clean it up. The default setting is too much cleaning. It defaults to about 75% but I turn it back to about 15% and it works great. Try it, you'll love it.

Mixxit12: Well, at the moment there are big troubles with CEP and dual amd. Go over to the syntrillium site and their forum. Full info over there.

Haburton: that waveclean, is it a standalone application, or part of something else? I never heard about it.

best i've tried

Hands down the best click and crackle eliminator I've ever used is Waves Restoration Collection plug-in set... If you have the money go for it.. it comes with X-Noise..it cleans up all noise and will make it sound crystal clear.. X-Click... removes clicks from any wav file... X-Crackle... takes out crackles and surface noise of audio files.. like recorded from vinyl.. and X-Hum.. removes ground loop hum.. mic pops etc. etc. etc.. I used to use Cool Edit Pro to do this for me and is a close 2nd to these plug-ins... and can get you a good sound.. but, just gonna take alot more work.. gl

Sorry for the long delay, WaveClean is a standalone shareware application available on most popular shareware sites. I love it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have some free time coming up to try all the suggestions; I just wanted to "revive" this thread for any last minute additions and see if anyone has used Pyro with success. Once again thanks....
