I have a few tapes to work on that are encoded with DBX. Rather than go out and buy a used DBX unit, does anyone know of a plugin (I use Reaper) that would work to decode this material once it is in the computer?
I saw this on the Analog forum, but was rushing out the door so didn't get to answer it then. Don't know why it got moved here. If there is something I don't know of, the analog forum is the best bet.
There are no plugs or software solutions that really work that I know of. I recommend keeping NR decoding on the analog side. dbx is more forgiving than Dolby when it comes to mistracking, but still a lot of issues in writing an effective plug. Well, just imagine trying to expand something ITB that was compressed using analog, not to mention the high frequency emphasis dbx does during encoding.
I can highly recommend two stereo units made by dbx: The 150X for dbx Type I and the 140X for dbx Type II. I have both of these and a few different Dolby units just in case. You have to find them used of course, on eBay or musicgoround. I see them for around $25.00 more or less.
