Is it a decent buy, or should I be looking for something a bit better. I was looking at the VC6Q also, but what are the true differences? What about the VC1Q?

well i have both those units, the 286A and the VC1.

they are both really nice preamps in their own worlds. i think that bass oriented tracks tend to sound a little more clearer through the DBX than the Meek.

I use the meek on a lot of vocal tracks, cus it's simply awesome. It has a particular character to it, so make sure the song is looking for that vibe.

save up and get both:-)

i dont particularly favour the de-esser on the dbx, but then ive played with the de-esser a few times.

LongWave...

I currently use my VC1Q (not CS version) with my SP C1 to record all my vocals as it is the only mic channel I have, but I am always on the look out for other mic pre bargains to accomodate other 'vibes'. Can you tell me if you believe that the 286A would be more suited to laid back soul style vocals than the Meek?

Don't get me wrong, I love my Meek, but not having anything else (apart from the pre's in the Delta Omni) to compare it to at home, I can't honestly say it is the best piece of kit for my voice and style?

I don't have much cash, so like I said, I'll only go for the odd bargain! I am currently looking at a used 286A for about £80, what do you rekon?

i love the vc1. i use that a lot. but ive never used the dbx on a vocal. i usually use it on acoutic gutars just to go through it's compressor cus that's nice on acoustics sometimes.

let me send you a track with the vc1 on it....

the track is "you say".

the dbx was doing something, but ive forgotton what.

did you buy the 286a then?...it's not something that should really be your main pre, but something to have around for it's colour.

Yo Evil One:

Grace Design 101 -- about 545 from Cascade Media. This was the best price I have found yet as I am shopping for that item.

The specs on the Grace unit are very good.

Check them out on line. Just punch up Grace Design.

Nope, I don't work for them. Just like quality units within my budget.

Green Hornet :D  :p :p ;) :D
