i record hiphop in protools/logic and love how crystal clear my vocals sound but sometimes for those old school beats you can not beat a old school sounding/stylized recording. obviously i do not have enough money to record directly to tape but i was thinking i could indirectly record to tape by recording my acapella in protools and bouncing it to tape to give it a "softer" feel for the song! can anyone recommend a good tape playing machine, or a method to achieve this?

because quality's an issue,

Or you could record to the tape machine and bounce it into Pro Tools.....

What is your budget for this?

Cheers! :)

Hi Noah,
The Revox A77/B77 will do a very good job..
But you could also look for cheaper reel-to-reel machines like a Sony or a Teac..

If you'd go for the Revox (preferably a 2-track ), you could also master your projects to tape for the "finishing touch".
Good luck!

It looks you are limited on how much you can spend, so I won't sidetrack you with "best machine for this job" recommendations, other than to say:

1. Buy a machine that you can go see locally and that already works.

2. It has to be a 3 head machine.

3. Preferably buy a 2-track rather than a 4-track machine for the extra track width.

4. Preferably get a machine that runs at 7 1/2 and 15ips, rather than one that runs at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 ips, for better quality. You'll normally want to do this work at 15 ips.

A high speed Revox certainly satisfies the second, third and fourth requirement. As does an Otari MX-5050. As would some other machines.

Good luck
