DAW Suggestions

I've tried out Mixcraft but it is very unstable and has latency problems. I tried out Reaper which is very stable and has low latency but the plug-ins are awful and installing plug ins is a crap shoot.

After being disappointed by Mixcraft I tried Reaper and was planning on using it for mixing tracks recorded on a hard drive recorder but like I said the effects and VSTi in Reaper are awful although tracking on Reaper works well.

Is there are DAW with the ease and work flow of Mixcraft with the stability of Reaper and has good samples and amp models that is under $150?

I found Mixcraft Sucks a good blog that discusses DAWs but they are not making any suggestions. Too bad Garage Band won't run on a PC.
 
If you don't like the plugins in Reaper (which is weird.....they have no style, but they're the best utilitarian plugs out there) just download some nice free ones. Check out Bootsy's stuff if you're looking for character.

Are you looking for utility EQ or character EQ? For utility EQ, I use the NoName EQ, forgot who makes it but its a free download. All my character EQ's are UAD plug-ins, so obviously not free, but I know Bootsy has some nice character EQ's as well.

I also have Studio One. You can get the free version from their website to try and if you like it you could purchase a better version. Artist is nice but you can't use any third party plugins (no Waves bundles, etc). Also it will not import MP3 so you have to convert to wav first. Producer will let you use third party plugins and let you import mp3 files.

You can go all the way up to Pro which comes with a mastering suite. I have producer and so far like it very much. It's not as difficult initially as Pro Tools or Logic but does a great job. I've also used Logic which I really like but it was harder to learn.

I used mixcraft initially and never had any stability problems. Latency I was able to get down the about 3ms so you may be having more problems than just DAW.
 
Try Sonimus EQ. Free. A very cool Pultec/api style hybrid. Lots of color there.
 
If you're looking for a Windows solution to GarageBand, I highly recommend giving Mixcraft 6 a second chance. In my eyes, it is GarageBand for Windows. That's what drew me to it. It feels similar, it's easy to use, and pretty easy to get the hang of (check out acoustica222's channel on YouTube).

When I first installed it, I too had problems with latency, but I was able to solve them through a little bit of reading and tinkering with the settings in the "Sound Device" tab under "Preferences".

There's an article on Acoustica's website titled "Important Sound Setup Information" that covers the issue pretty well, as does a video on YouTube titled "Mixcraft 5 Tutorials - Mixcraft 5 Windows Part 4: Latency and Audio Issues".

As for stability issues, I can't say that I've ever had any problems with it being unstable. What kinds of problems have you experienced? One can't be certain, but it's possible that the problem wasn't within the program, but rather your computer. What are your computer's specs, i.e. operating system, CPU/processor, RAM, etc...?

Studio One Version Two. Free. Professional. And like the reviewers say.. "It just works". Awesum, you'll never use another until you can afford to hire a studio then it won't matter. It's an excellent program and very stable. And cheap. (free)
