Whats gonna happen? Any way around this? DOnt want to buy an modem, but I could buy one, register, update it XP and a few drivers, and take it back.
Any better ideas?

Isn't there a way to do this via phone to MS tech support? This issue (product activation) is one that has kept me from trying XP on the DAW. I too have no modem on the music box and I have no intention of adding one. An activation-related issue is XP's wanting to be re-registered if you add/change major components. Suppose you decide to upgrade to the latest screaming fast mobo/cpu combo? Thanks tube, for bringing this issue up. Hopefully someone will have positive news for you and those of us that are still on the fence.

Shag- This is the latest, greatest anti-piracy scheme, brought to you by yer good friends at Microsoft. In order to prevent users from installing XP on more than one computer there is a product activation deal whereby your version of XP needs to phone home with computer-specific codes and register itself. If it isn't registered with the mother ship within a certain period of time it stops working. The problem that I see is it's need to be re-registered if you add/remove major components. You are at the mercy of MS as to whether or not they believe that your new components are just that -or- another machine entirely!

The above is a "simplistic" look at this issue but hopefully, mostly correct.

kool..thanks..:)

I understand this part now..

BTW..I just installed xp pro on a friends computer...we are in a group together and we're getting ready to buy and install a prosumer soundcard...

what I'm wondering is:

why there is a problem with uninstalling a modem?

why would he have to buy one?...

i mean if you do this (uninstall or upgrade HW), then xp dials up microblowmesofter, it's just an ass pain..

but not a real big issue..right? wrong?

i mean re-registering doesn't do anything to your software license number or registration..does it?

just wondering...:)

I guess i'm seeing it as the same ass pain that winblows updater gives..

OK, OK, OK... let's not go running off half-cocked here... :p

Micro$coff has implemented a new anti-piracy procedure. Now, after you enter your Product key code, you have to "activate" the software. Otherwise it will only work for 30 days. To activate, you can either do it via dial-up/LAN automatically, which takes aboot two seconds, or you can call the 800 number provided with the software. The software will need to be re-activated ONLY if you change multiple major components of the system, such as the motherboard and Hard Drive... you will NOT have to re-activate everytime you get a new CD-RW or video card. Micro$cum is not looking forward to losing customers just to try to avoid piracy, so they are being fairly accomodating in re-activation. All you have to do is call the same 800 number and give em your Product Key code and what not and tell em you got a new motherboard and what not and they'll re-activate it.

Yes, it's a pain in the @ss... but if I was losing literally billions of dollars from people using my product without paying for it, I'd prolly be trying every trick in the book too, just to try and put an end to it... (not that they'll ever put an end to piracy.. but hey.. they can try... :p ) I can already get a hacked verison of XP any day of the week.. :p so obviously it's still not a "fool proof" method.

lol

i believe m$ will be ok in the profit department lol...:D

i'd just let it dial up everytime you upgrade HW..not a real biggie really...

Hey man.. losin' money is losin' money... whether you're rich or not. :p Just because you still got profits left doesn't mean you should just "shrug" when you find out someone's stealin' your income.

right on!! :D

I like their methods!!

When people come into my store, I'll make sure to frisk them going and coming.

And I'll just charge whatever I want to because I have no real competition.

and they'll just have to accept it!!!

:D...im j/k around..

but i really don't condone stealing...but i also don't condone ass ripping $$$ and constant monitoring....:D

Well,... that's what they're doing now. XP is what, six months on the market? What will they be doing next year when official support for Win2K is history? 98se is history now isn't it? Sorry if I'm still a little less than confident in MS's better nature.
