Hello people :D

In anticipation of my tax-back payout... I'm planning to buy a little laptop.

Since they seem very handy due to sie and battery life.... I'm going for a 12" Ibook...
So I can take notes, surf etc at school, AND have something to take home at weekends when I go back to my parent's house and do beats in reason.

Since I won't get THAT much dough back, we're probably looking at a 600 mhz version with a max of 640mb RAM.

So.... I have a good DAW at home..but like I said...for going-back-to-mama and mobile purposes...it would be cool to have a little bit of audio recording going on...pref. in 48 khz 24 bit.
Nothing fancy, just a few tracks of rapping etc.

I'm thinking in the region of maybe something like vegas, protools free, tracktion, or....?

I ask of you: enlighten me!

:D

thanks,

Mo-Kay

Three programs that will not run on your iBook! :P
Or at least, I'm pretty sure of it. I'm fairly sure Vegas and Tracktion are PC only. Pro Tools Free exists for Mac but only in OS 9.

If it comes with/you provide Mac OS X, there is always GarageBand 2. It is part of iLife '05 and I think it might be just what you need to start with. The original GarageBand is still floating out there as well, but if you need to buy iLife, it's only $49, and the other software is well worth it too. Make sure your RAM is as high as you can get it though.

The only problem you may have is if the iBook does not have a DVD or Combo drive. The disc for GarageBand comes on DVD due to the large loop library.

Then, there's the sound card. Are you going to use onboard sound or external, such as USB or FireWire? Some sound card packages come with bundled recording software. I know Cubase LE ships with a few cards, and I recommend that as well. It is very very fast on slower machines, where GarageBand may konk out with low resources.

What kind of deal are you getting on the ibook g3 600? Wouldn't you be better off with a G4? I think you can get one for just under 1K. You would have a much faster machine for a few hundred extra. In addition, you wouldn't be getting a used/rebuilt machine setup to dual boot OS9/10 with classic mode. And you wouldn't have to worry about the known issues with the ibook g3 logic board. Just a thought.

well... an ibook g3 600 goes for about 500 euros around here...

and I really like the small 12" size... very handy for school...

any other suggestions people?
