Davemania! It's been a long time coming!

I'm starting to think that Tom, you and I are connected at the cosmic hip. I have a couple of buddies that come over an just jam here at my studio on Thursday afternoons fo shits and grins and both the of these two tunes (Wooden Ships and Long Time Gone) we jammed on too. Just got a little loose in a few spots bro but it's cool. These are a blast to do.

Your vocals in this song for some reason put me in mind of Eric Clapton. Harmonies were really nice! The drums were a little off beat in a few places. Overall a real pleasure to listen to!

Pretty cool Dave.

Timing issues for sure, but getting stuff down and having a bit of fun is the important part.

I find it lopsided mix-wise. Left favoured.

Cool.

Big Davemania fan here! yep, some timin issues, but it made me smile, and thats what music is all about.....:)

Timing and intonation issues. But you sure sounded like you were having fun. Wish I had been there. :D

Thanx y'all for listening!

Okay,... well, I can't say that if I suck it's 'cause I'm only 16, and I can't say that all of this tune is a throw-together of only scratch tracks, and not the real tune itself, haha,...

But, what I can say, is that...

A) the timing issues due to myself and lack of performance could stand to be redone a little 'smarter',...

B) the locked-in smooth harmonies of CSN are quite the model of perfection, and are really tough to duplicate at my level of singing [hack]. Sure, the shimmering vocals of CSN sound great on listening, and trying to cover one of their songs gives me a much higher respect for them, and how good they are. That's a tough act to cover, but I dig their songs and harmonies, and I'll keep working on it.

C) Despite the glories of digital,... I did this one with two all digital 4-tracks sync-locked together with MTC, and honestly, it's been giving me fits from it's being prone to skip, and/or having the two machines drift noticeably off sync. I'm not blaming the roughness in timing or looseness of production on the machines, but the damn things will skip and blip, little microseconds worth of time, intermittently, just enough to cause timing issues,... uh,... latency, I think. Not only that, but notice the fade out? Well, that was necessitated because of a bad punch on track 4 corrupted the entire 4-tracks, and caused a skip to be hard coded onto the disc, right at the very end of the song. Digital, YIKES! Headaches!

>The moral: I may keep working on this song on it's present recording system, because there are parts of the performance that could be polished up, almost everything, but if I see that the skipping and drifting continue, I may just re-record the entire song on another unit altogether, preferrably a single-platform 8-track,... and not some mickey-moused-sync setup. [READS: Either I'll score a Fostex FD-8, or I'll hop onto my existing 38/M30 or 388 ANALOG TAPE systems.

See, all this skipping and drifting would never happen on tape,... only in digital. Ah, the glory!

>Wrapup: I'm a home recording hackmeister, and I know it, but I'll keep working on my 'act'. I'm sure it shows, but I'm a bit behind on my practice schedule. I need to bust out a few jams more regularly, and work up my chops, and timing, and harmonies, etc. I've been in the doldrums for months, but finally found some inspiration, so now I'll capitalize on it, and try to keep it going. [Hark, I hear the 388 calling me,... ].

Thanx again for listening, peeps! ;)

Hey Reel,
The quality of the recording aint too bad man, but those meter problems are hurting my feelings:) If thats due to skipage w/ your recorder, .....feed that sucker to the dog.:D I liked the vocs....... it takes big 'uns to attempt the vocals on a csn song. ....nice stuff reel!

I don't have anything helpful to add, but I wanted to say that your attitude rocks. Man, I struggled with a freakin' Tascam 4-Track, and I couldn't even figure THAT out.

subliminal message: recording on a computer is a kabillion times easier than a digital recorder or analog machine...really easy.

I like your taste in music, and I thought the git tones suited the song. I really like your vocal on this, actually. I listened to Solitary Man too, mostly because I was raised on N.D. Man, can I use a lot of words to say nothing or what?

you already have a computer because you're posting songs on the internet...get some multitracking software and leave your worries behind.

Post lots,
-chris

If you've ever heard any of their live stuff (e.g., 4 way street, woodstock) even they can't duplicate their studio harmonies. (Of course, drugs and alcohol may have played a role in that.) :)

good song to cover..............i like the lead vocal......a few pitch issues, but i really like the voice.........it fits the song well........

the harmonies sound alright too..........how do you EQ harmony vocals? any tricks?

Gotsta give Dave a shout, since he was one of the first to welcome yours truly to the site upon arrival (the 'tother being badgas)...

(:D As soon as I finish listening to Scott Tansley's Black Crowes cover here, I'll check yer tune... :D)

Here goes

Yeah, the guitar tones are good... that one panned slightly right rules... little slow fingerpickin' ... the notes just sing...

Overall performance a bit loose... but this is Davemania, for cryin' out loud! T'ain't 'bout that! It's about the groove!

Very cool feel... makes me wanna walk around a county fair, thru the grass and tents, sippin' some cool drink, listenin' to the band up on one of the stages just drunk off their ass, but groovin'...

Stick around this time, Dave! It has been a while, for cryin' out loud ;)

I like Mothers Little helper. That sounds pretty good. The timing and pitch issues on Long Time Gone need to be addressed.
Mothers Little Helper, on the other hand, is pretty much in time and on pitch.

You know....when I first started coming here I saw Davemania everywhere and being a newbie I didn't understand. So you're Davemania.......cool. I want the next CD

Yeah, howdy!

The latest news is that the damn digital recorder-thingy skips, verified, and I've transitioned back over to tape based production.

The Fostex FD-4 and the Tascam 564 both skip occasionally, but if the Fostex skips, it's some sort of glitch in the memory, [not permanent], and if the Tascam skips, the glitch goes right down to the disk, [permanent]. That's really for the birds, so it's back to tape, and thank god for the 388, that I could get up & tracking right away, without gadgeting-out on hardware problems,... and the 388 sounds great too.

On the production side, I've rerecorded this song entirely from scratch, and as of yet it's not done, but I'll venture to say it's a lot better than the first version. Look for the newly recorded version of this song to post hopefully on Sunday evening, pending completion of the drums and lead vocal, maybe a touch up of the backing vocal, again. Anyway, no rush, and however long it takes, a few more days maybe, this newly recorded version should prove to be better than the first, so stay tuned for that. The basic tracks, so far, sound cool,... in fact, I'm 'soaking in it'.

>Meshuggah, a free cd?... that's really cool, and original too. I'll email you for a CD. Thanx for the link. I listened to the first cut & am pretty impressed. Thanx. Rock on!

>Guernica, yeah, I noticed the drums go ker-chunk-ker-chunk a couple times, and it's hurting me too. It seems like I had the most trouble in the easy part, the turnaround phrase. Geez, if the machine's not skipping, I am,... it's always something, it's either one thing or the other!

>Lt. Bob, you're on the list for my next release, if/when one is put out. I've got an idea for a single cd that has my latest few recordings, together with a highlight retrospective of the 4-cd set, believe it or not, haha. Anyway, I wanna work up more new material too, so I'll go one step at a time. Recording is just plain fun!

>Part-y-pants, You're so right, Davemania's about the groove. Anyway, I really haven't been away, I'm just here, hanging out. I try to post if I have something to say that's relevant, and not post if I don't. I like to catch music/stuff on the MP3 forum and catch up on certain other narrowminded discussions, like Tascam, Fostex and Analog,... the least popular forums. Oh, not to mention, every once in a while, I catch up with monty for a few laughs in the Cave. Haha. I'll make sure you catch my new release too, if/when there ever is one.

>Powderfinger, yeah man, cool, thanx! I've got no "tricks", only that I'm recording these specific tracks with the basic instruments and a single SM57 mic. I have certain rules of thumb in recording, regarding trying to keep my mic technique consistent, level of playing up, and that a little EQ goes a long way. Another basic technique is that I always mix an ambience mic in with any line-in instrument, such as bass or electric guitar, even keyboards, to bring more liveness to the recorded track. Most of the other tonal things in my recordings are done with a combination of a little EQ and mic placement, and just listening for what sounds best.

>ChrisHarris, thanx man, your attitude rocks too. I'm telling you man, even though digital recording has that great "WOW"-factor, [as in, "Wow, how do I do this?"], I'm SO much happier on a simple analog setup, it's really my home base. I'll work up more stuff and post again, maybe soon.

I appreciate the helpful suggestions from everyone, so keep them coming. I'll let everyone know when the new version mp3 posts, maybe tomorrow night, or maybe in a few more days,...

and THANX FOR LISTENING!

;)

Dave Sez: It's back to the future with ANALOG!

Okay, the new version mp3 is HERE! "Long Time Gone".

Pls everybody take a second listen, same link as above.

You have my guarantee of quality, and THANX!;)

Well that's better.....the skipping is gone and the timing is much better. I'd like to hear the guitar better. Hope this posts before the New Year.

You know, I was thinking the same thing!

The other night I read your comments, a few minutes after you posted them, then I immediately posted a slight remix to NWR, bringing the guitar a little more forward, so check it out. Just thought I'd tell'ya.

This site's been so sucky-slow lately, that it's been hard to read or post anything!

Thanx again for listening and for your comments.

Better yet, I was polishing the vocals all week,...

so I'm posting yet another remix, this time with vocals redone, new remix as of 11/27/02. Y'all gotta hear this! Analog lives!

That wraps it up for "Long Time Gone", and I'll try to produce something new really soon.

Pls take a listen again to the newest remix, same link as above, thx.
