A DAT deck is a digital audio tape deck that uses a particular format of tape cartridge called, strangely enough, DAT. It's purely a stereo recorder, just a digital version of the old two-track cassette or reel-to-reel.

An ADAT (Alesis Digital Audio Tape) deck is a multitrack deck. It uses S-VHS video tape and records eight tracks of digital audio. Multiple machines can be ganged together and synchronized to give you 16 or 24 channels.
