Thanks for checking it out. I guess that it is a good idea to be looking at getting a better mic pre, too. Any suggestions?

I dont think you can go wrong with a RNP.

You will still have budget for mic shopping.

Good Luck

ebay sells a bunch everyday
focusrite, rnp, dmp, studio projects, you might even find an hhb or tl audio for around$300 - $400. I just picked up an hhb radius 50 to add to the flock and I really think it sounds great, really full and punchy

P.S. Do a search on pre amps here....there's a lot of smart recording guys on this bbs that have talked about every level of budget pre's and probably won't chime in because they have already exhausted the topic

10-4 on the RNP!

I have a couple of those mics...

I have a TLM103 and a AKG414BULS. The Neumann is a bright mic, and very clear and detailed. And excellent mic not only for vocals, but also for acoustic guitar. It is only cardoid though. You can go with the TLM127 if this is a probelm. The AKG is a much darker mic. VERY different. To me it almost has more of a ribbon character on vocals. It is also good on acoustic guitar, but it is much more specific in this regard: I don't think it would be a good "solitary" acoustic guitar mic. I use it only to capture a low end in conjunction with other mics. Here is my opinion on mic-buying: great mics will not only sound better, but they are easier to sell if you need to. Don't skimp on pres, mics, and compressors if you can. I started off like you, a grand or less, but ended up buying not only the TLM103 and AKG, but also a stereo pair of KM184s and an M149! I'm hooked! Plus, I want more mics and would not willingly sell any mic, since they are all very good in different ways

Vsimmons- I think you have got one weird C414 or one weird set of ears. I find the 414 to be bright and transparent, and ideally suited as a solo mic for recording acoustic guitar. Check this link and listen to the song "Requiem". It is a mono house mix, no panning, no EQ, no bass cut, no compression, no reverb. Both guitars were recorded with a single C414B-ULS on the 12th fret. Would you call it dark?-Richie

I agree on the PRE. Get the RNP AND shop around for something on a more "channel strip" feel...

"SM-57" takes on a whole new meaning through a nice preamp...

$1000 isn't an awful lot to go on for premium mic pre's, but then there's an awful lot of them to choose from out there.

With mic preamps, you CAN go "cheap" as long as you go "good" - Every preamp, as compressors & mics, have unique tonal qualities. Therefore, having an arsenal to choose from is a good thing. When the $$$ allows, you can go higher. However, you might want to keep your less expensive units also. Spices for the chef, you know?

for recording accoustic guitar I use a combination which seems to work well for me:

I use a M-Audio Delta 66/Omni Studio

I record 2 channels (or 1 stereo channel). One channel I go direct from the gutar to the Omni Studio. The other I use the AKG 414BULS.

Direct it sounds a little too bright to my ears. The 414 is a little warmer. Using both gives me a nice mix of the two that gives the most natural sound.

Anyway.... works for me.
