DANCING IN THE SMOKE
© Buck Stewart / August

It smoldered and burst into an all consuming fire
An insatiable blaze consumed with it’s desire
Longing, leaping and licking at the wind
Never realizing what would happen in the end

It was a cold grey day in June when you went away
I didn’t see it coming wore all the wrong clothes that day
Burning flames of love were too bright to last
All that’s left are grey white ashes scattered in the past

No place I want to go
Bleary eyed, yearning so
Dead and crazy crying
Spinning like a spoke
I’m falling, laughing, twirling
Left
Dancing in the smoke

Remains of lonely thoughts on a rising breeze
Embers ebb, ashes float, by and by grow cold and freeze
Feel the sinking inside, not wanting it to be
A devastated heart, spiraling down on me

No place I want to go
Bleary eyed, yearning so
Dead and crazy crying
Spinning like a spoke
I’m falling, laughing, twirling
Left
Dancing in the smoke

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust, it seems so cruel
Who can know the reasons a fire outruns it’s fuel
Shadows stalk the mind with haunting whiffs of dreams
Dim beginnings, self delusions, end in quiet screams

No place I want to go
Bleary eyed, yearning so
Dead and crazy crying
Spinning like a spoke
I’m falling, laughing, twirling
Left
Dancing in the smoke

Sparks flew in the wind burned and died in mid air
All is lost in my life, there is nothing left to stoke
I can’t see a future
Dancing in the smoke
