Arg....next week me and my band are recording a demo and i was gunna go pick up a studio projects b1 for an overhead drum mic. So i called up daddys junky music, and all they have in my budget is the sampson c1. I was wondering if this was any good mainly for an overhead, but maybe as a vocal mic. or if we should just use an sm58 for vocals. Has anyone had any experience with this mic? thanks

I wouldnt bother...save up for good quality mics so you dont have to buy twice...the SM58 will be fine...these types of things shine much better through a quality pre though...in any case - I doubt a Sampson C1 will outshine it...I personally wouldnt spend the cash...cheap OHs can be the Oktava MK012 (you can score 2 for $100 at GC) as well as a bunch of other options...

well all i have for pres is the cheap ones on a behringer ub1202. I was just wanting some kind of condensor for both vocals and an overhead, and maybe a room mic for guitar. I called all around and i was gunna settle with the c1. The thing is, is that i need it for next week. I have an couple other dynamic mics, but i cant use more than 4, and i need decent drum recordings. I have a sm58, axs-3, some sheinhieser.(cant spell) and another cheap one...do you think that would be sufficiant for drum recording? and if so, what mics do you think i should use for different drums?

thanks

oh yea and i called up guitar center, and all they had was some used condensor for like $110, i think.

thanks

Okay - a couple things. First - a condenser is not necessarily the 'be all end all' for vocals..the SM58 should do fine as you are just doing a rough demo (if you arent doing a rough demo - you have a lot farther to go). It is used on some high class albums. Certain mics work for certain vox. However - my point is that a Samson mic isnt going to give you anything that you cant already get...You can get a drum sound with what you have. Its all about placement and having fun. Ive done it with an SM57 for the heck of it - and it turned out better than I dreamed it might. So try stuff out and save for better gear.

If you become too focused on the sound, you will have little fun and, in the end, never get the sound. Passion recorded with a POS mic is much better than emotionless crap recorded at Abbey Rd
So stick up the mics, make sure the signals arent clipping, and rock. You can figure out which mics you dont want to include and which you do.

yea, i agree completely, thats what i plan on doin now. Thanks for the advise and hopefuly itll come out good, but mostly itll be fun and a good learnin experience. thanks alot.

when im done ill put up some songs on soundclick. even though our "music" is pretty much noise. If you want to hear how it comes out, ill be sure to let you.

Well in that case - you can buiy some really cheap mics, throw them into the Behringer...jack up the gain and walk away...you will have your noise without any effort...:D
Look forward to see what you do...make sure you post

yea

well, i havent posted here in a while, but me and my singer put money together, and bought a shure ksm 09 for an overhead. I just got back from practice like, an hour ago. We recorded some drum tracks with a shure axs-3 on snare, 58 on bass, ksm 09 as an overhead, a sheinheisser on floor tom and some cheap mic on high tom. Everything but the hi hat came out really good i think. Im definitly pleased with the relusts. We havent done too much recording yet, but we are going to soon. (dont really know when cause our drummers gettin surgery on his lounge) but itll happen, and ill post it. and thanks for the help.

I think he'd get better relusts if the surgery were done on an operating table. :)

Lounge? Did you mean lung?
With those pre's it probably doesnt matter what mics you use, so buy a 12 pack of RS's for $29.99 and go with it.

???

Just outta curiosity, what Daddy's are you near???

I get most of my stuff from my local Daddy's.
They're very cool to deal with and you can find some great deals.

I live near Albany NY which is where my local store is.

wow, i cant spell. shows you where your tax dollars are goin. And even though the behringer pres suck, there good enough for punk. atleast by my standards. One thing though, i was wondering if someone could tell me what reverse phasing and what not is..cause people are always like "i threw down some skippy reverse phase on the bass drum and it was sexy." and do you think it would even help the mix (im saying that as if i know what it means already) and yea...thanks

The best buy for your needs right now may well be the deal that GC is offering. You can buy two Oktava MK319's for $99. I haven't tried them on OH but I have heard many guys who's opinion I respect, say the 319's are very, very good on overheads. They are descent on vocals as well. That's what I would buy if I were you.

Blessings, Terry

Hey, i went to the daddys in vernon connecticut, but they didnt have the goods, if you know im sayin...anyways, me and my band recorded a really rough copy of one of our songs called this is life, i dont really like it, and i dont like the drum sounds, cause we didnt play around with them enough....the songs at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/2/ffrmusic.htm
its the one called 'this is life (without bass)'
try to enjoy

and actually, the vocals are from a different version that i cut up and put in this version...keep in mind its not really what were lookin for or what we can get.
