Cumputer recording newbie

Hey everyone, in a few days ill be getting my first digital mixer (Behringer ddx3216) and i had a few basic questions about how to do some stuff since itll be my first time recording with computers. Since I'm a drummer, and will be recording mostly drums, i wanted to know what kind of card or whatever else i would need so that each individual track shows up in the computer program (I'll be using Sound Forge 6.0). in other words I would like each drum to have its own track on the screen. I generally use 8 mics when i record but I would really like the option to add more tracks if i need to.... And also, how would i go about mixing those individual tracks once they are recorded and in Sound Forge with the mixer? Id rather mix with the mixer since it already comes with alot of effects and options.

My first thought was "digital mixer, well you'll probably want to use the AD/DA's on that then and go digital into the computer". Converting AD/DA twice seems illogical and you could have saved some bucks (EWS88D) or opted for a better card (RME). But that doesn't seem possible without additional investment. It seems possible though, and according to this

I might be full of shit - I don't have a digital mixer...

thanks guys for the answers.... yeah i guess the delta 10/10 is what i would need.... one thing though, i dont believe that the ddx3216 has outs for each of the pre's which makes sence since each channel serves as two channels so how would i use the eight ins on the delta 10/10 to get the eight individual mic signals onto their own "waveform" in the computer program? Sorry if thats a dumb question but this whole computer recording thing has got me really mixed up. Im used to much simpler things...... after all.... I AM a drummer ;)
 
Wait a minute. Why would you want to do unneccessary digital to analog and analog to digital conversions when you already have the signals in digital domain in the DDX3216?

All you need is the ADAT expansion board for the DDX3216 and a sound card with at least two ADAT interfaces.

Hey thanks PeteHalo.... thats ALOT simpler.... so that would do the whole individual tracks thing in the computer program too? that would be great.

Oh and another thing, which interface would you suggest for what im wanting to do?

To get the most out of this thing...

I would say to check out the MOTU 2408 boxes (you can get the MKII and MKI's for cheaper used now that the MKIII is out...).

You get 8 analog ins and outs, and three banks of ADAT Optical I/O. Each Adat optical carries another 8 channels of audio.

So you get the ADAT card for your mixer and connect to bank 1. There's your 8 separate channels. If you need more, use the channel inserts on the mixer to the 2408's analog ins.

You can use 24I/O at once, so fill up the analog I/O and one ADAT, and you still have room to expand the sucker to 24 using either another ADAT card in the mixer, or something like Behringer's ADA8000 which features 8 preamps to an ADAT lightpipe output for around $200.

A versatile setup with room to grow. That's where it's at.
