Hey

quick question:

what is the difference between a pedal compressor and a rack mount? I'm asking becuase I want to know why you can plug your guitar directly into a compressor pedal and not directly into a rack mount unit compressor? Or am I just totally wrong?

Impedance differences.

One is designed for the typical guitar output level and the other is looking for standard line level.

Chances are, the rack mount will also have lower self noise.

.......and also the pedal comp is mostly used as a dynamics controller in conjunction with say distortion, flange etc when using a guitar, while most rackmountables are used to also control the dynamics, but mostly during recording and/or mixing down. However if recording guitar, an outboard comp can be used to process a git's signal via connecting to the boards channel insert.
