Hi, it has been recommended to me that I get the Cubase package for my iBook. I was told it has the hardware I need, great software, and is Midi compatible, all for like $400. That sounds good to me. Anybody used it and have recommendations? Also, it's USB, not Firewire - is that a big deal? Thanks!!

What package is this?
Cubase is just the software. Likely you are looking at a hardware option that includes a bundled version of Cubase in the purchase.
Personally, I would opt for a FireWire hardware solution.
The PreSonus Firepod comes bundled with Cubase LE and I would imagine there would be an upgrade path to SX.

Crankz 1 He is talking about the Cubase system/4 USB interface bundled with Cubase LE, Havent heard very good things about the interface though.

Ah .... I see.
Yeah ... No, don't get the System4 Package.
Firepod would be a better option.

Firepod is a bit out of my price range...any other good products closer to 4 or 5 hundred bucks?

Millions!!! There are tonnes of decent software packages around for quite cheap - look at Cakewalk Sonar, N-Track, Tracktion, Cubase LE and so on.

Then you just need a soundcard plus preamp of some kind. The Edirol solutions look decent enough but I haven't heard great things of the M-Audio USB interfaces. Firewire is preferable but not essential if you are using USB 2.0. Maybe even the Behringer BCA2000 would be a good all-in-one type thing for you?
