Cubase vs Sonar? I need to decide. Help!

I have never owned a computer recording setup but I need to get one in the next few months. I know about 6 friends that make a full time living with their home PC based studios; half of them recently switched to Sonar and say it's more stable and user friendly. The other half swear by cubase. How can I decide? Any suggestions?

Try out the demos; that's what I did.

You can get demos of CubaseSX and Sonar from on-line and also go to the bookstore and plop down in the cafe with the various books.

You cannot take other's judgement about what will work best for YOU. You have to have personal time with both programs to make the decision.
 
Personally, Cubase SX:) I have limited, but some experience in Sonar. I didn't like the layout at all, and over all felt like Sonar seemed a little more like a toy when compared to Cubase. However, I have been a Steinberg user for several years now so am very used to it. That means that a great program could come out, and I may not like it as much unless I spent enough time on it. I will say though that Steinberg applications get far more professional use in studios then Sonar does. Not that Sonar is bad because it certainly isn't. Also, my Nuendo system runs absolutely rock solid for as many as 80-100 hours a week sometimes. I never had problems in Cubase SX either. I have switched between the two repeatedly based on which program updates first:)
 
Cubase is looked at as more Pro than Sonar as it has been around much longer and Steinberg are behind the hole thing really, inventing VST and ASIO...when I used the Sonar 4 demo I found that I was pressing more buttons to do things and Cubase just had a more robust feel to it...

Sonar normally lags behind in functions apart from the odd thing..

the only thing in Sonar I would like is the drag and drop inserts which is meant to come in Cubase soon (funny as its already in WAVELAB)

its true you need to try it out to find which one works better for your way of working...take note SX3 is much better than SX1 and at the moment there is only an SX1 demo

I would say if its a hobby then get Sonar , its cheaper .... if you plan on going pro and building your set up more...I would spend the little bit extra and get Cubase

this is my view anyway.
