I think considering you will be sitting in front of whatever you choose probably for hours at a time a newbie should try them both. Its definately not a one size fits all thing. I know we have a lot of guitar players on here as well as vocalists who choose to use little if any midi and then we have the keyboard players like myself who will use midi and plug-ins.
I think it is as much about the interface you choose to use. Some software has more support from one interface vs. another. If you use a Tascam interface you can't go with pro tools. If you have a Yamaha 01X you will very likely go with Cubase.I would go as far as to say decide what it is your going to be doing the most of,midi, audio, syncing to video,THEN pick the interface that best suits that on your budget,THEN pick the software that best works with that interface. If you have an older cpu maybe opt for the emu with its own effects chip.
Yes most software will work with most interfaces, but some will work more efficiently with one interface vs. another because there are templates etc.
As if this isnt already complicated enough get ready to see Abelton and Acid with most of the capabilities Cubase and Cakewalk have. Maybe enough to justify buying them instead(depending).

I've been using Cakewalk since the DOS versions when it was practically the only game in town for PC sequencing. I subsequently upgraded to Home Studio 2002. My recent positive experience with SONAR LE prompted me to upgrade my Home Studio to full SONAR 5 Studio as I wanted access to the higher quality soft synths and VST EFX. Plus, SONAR LE proved to be very easy to use.

I basically have stuck with Cakewalk as each version has provided a legitimate and useful upgrade from the previous. I also have skipped the necessity of unlearning old terms / processes re-learning brand new software and consequently have remained productive as many elements are common and familiar as SONAR continues to develop.

If Cubase was better, it would only be marginally better for a short time before Cakewalk caught up again, plus I'd rather be a master of one platform as opposed to being marginally capable of using several platforms.

Samplitude definitely is a winner for mastering, has good tools for the price!

Damn joey, way to drag up a 5 year old thread! Do they even make Cakewalk anymore?!:D:p

PS, Reaper Rules!

I suppose it really isn't fair for me vote, because I've never used cakewalk- I've been using cubase since 99- but cubase 5 is just amazg. it lacks direct x support, which i do not understand, but other than that it rocks.

This thread is 6 years old.:p

Still using N-track. Never a second of problems.
