I was thinking about buying the Firepod and getting the LE version of Cubase, or buying a different interface (thought about the MOTU HD) and buying the full version of Cubase SX. What would I be missing with the LE? Just getting started with this digital recording and gonna build a computer aournd what i buy. do you guys suggest either or another?

I am planning on recording my metal band and eventually moving on to all music styles recording.

Cubase LE only comes bundled with a interface, it is the lowest version of Cubase, SX3 is the top of the line Cubase so you wont miss a thing.
it goes

Cubase LE
Cubase SE
Cubase SL, 1,2 OR 3
Cubase SX, 1,2 OR 3

Hope that helps

What do you mean I won't miss a thing? I will get all the features of SX if I buy the Firepod and get the LE version? Can LE be upgraded to SX?

I meant if you buy SX that is the top of the line Cubase with all the features, the LE is the watered down version meaning there are alot of options you wont have vs SX.

and yes you can upgrade to SX from LE. Hope that helps out!

LE and/or SE (they are the same thing) has about 80% of the features of the full-blown version. There are charts on the steinberg site comparing the versions.

You can upgrade but it comes out to the same as buying SX from a discount mail-order anyway... you won't save any money.

I switched over to SE while going through some NTrack 3-to-4upgrade teething problems (mostly solved now; it's also a great recording program) and you can't go wrong with starting out with SE/LE.

LE isn't SE

LE is actually a lighter version than SE -- check out this chart for comparisons. I use LE and it's been fine, but I will definitely be upgrading. LE only comes with 2 inserts and 4 sends per channel and it's limiting sometimes.

I just got my Firebox last weekend and I recorded a song using Cubase LE. Compared to SX I think sound wise it isn't any different. I have used a not so legal version of SX which has been wiped away from my computer so I am aware of what features are not in the LE version. I missed the extended mixer views, the additional plugins, and the amount of effects per channel but I don't miss the guilt. There are plenty of good free plugins that will make up for what's missing.
I will gladly use my limited but legal copy of LE in place of a bootleg SX. I most likely will upgrade within a year but LE seems to do the job just fine for what I record.
