Hi! I'm learning how to record MIDI music in Cubase, and I've run into some problems. My system is a P566 Celeron with Cubase 3.7 and a Turtle Beach Daytona, Roland Jv-1010 (including SoundDiver OEM) and a GEM WS2. I use the GEM just to send MIDI data, i.e. I'm not (at this point) interested in using the GEM's internal sounds.

Now I have the gear hooked up this way: GEM MIDI out1->
Jv-1010 MIDI in, GEM MIDI out2->Daytona MIDI in and finally a to host cable connecting the 1010 to the serial port on my PC. I have set the computer switch on the back panel on the 1010 to PC-2, and now I hope to be able to use the studiodriver for the 1010 in Cubase to select patches on different MIDI channels and record my music. This seemed to be working until I wanted to edit a sound in SoundDiver (I wanted some delay effects). After going into SoundDiver I set the delay the way I wanted it and saved the patch in the user patch memory. Then I went to Cubase to select this patch using the studio driver (using it in patch mode, selecting the patch from the inspector). But now my fine delay effect is gone! I suspect that this has something to do with performance modes? I suppose using the 1010 in performance mode is the right thing to do if you want to record and play back MIDI simultaneously? But how will I then be able to enjoy all the nice effects in the 1010? Will I have to "construct" a performance for each and every song I record in Cubase?

I'm also wondering about the studio driver (jv1010x, version 1.2 by Robert Weigl). I can't seem to edit the patches the way I want when I double-click the patch in Cubase. It seems as if the controllers don't react/interact in real time. Is it necessary to click "Update" everytime I make a change to any of the settings (efx, reverb time etc) in order for these to take place?

Many thanks in advance!

Speaking as a studio owner/engineer/producer, two many times I have encountered the problem that your having with Soundiver/Cubase. Your right. It is the fact that when you edit a patch in Soundiver, it will sound different when you play it in Performance mode. That is because in Performance mode, you cant assign a different effect for each channel/patch. It will use a global effect over all the patches. But what I do is, create the effect/delay or what ever I want in Soundiver, leave the jv-1080 in Patch mode(which is MIDI channel 1 for me) go to Cubase MIDI channel 1, record my sequence for that channel so it plays my effect. Then right away, I bump that MIDI track to a Audio file.
