um, so I just got my new computer, K7 800 with lots of ram and a c-port soundcard and new ASIO 2.0 drivers for low latency.
BUT!

I'm getting crackles in the sound when I record audio similar to the sound I was getting on my old computer when the Buffer setting in the system settings was too low..

I would get a similar crackling when I was running 12 tracks on my old computer using 336 buffers per sample (what does that mean?) . Now my new computer should be about 5 times better but I can't record even one track without the crackles!

I've tried changing the memory per channel and buffer sizes in the system area, but not helping.
This problem only happens in Cubase! Cool Edit records perfectly no glitches!
VST Instruments sound great too, Cubase 3.75.

If someone knows about buffer settings etc, please help

Thanks, Paulo

I'm using the internal master clock at 44.1Khz,

The c-port can also do 48 and 96, if that helps..
I can hear LESS crackling when I change the buffers per sample in the the ASIO control panel up to 1800 samples per buffer, but they are still there..

On my old computer I would'nt need to use that amount of samples per buffer until I was trying to playback 14+ channels of audio!

However, I think the crackles are in the recording path, exporting the tracks to wavelab, the crackles have been recorded on.. However I think my soundcard is fine, I can record in wavelab with no crackles!

Thanks for the help..

Yep, just installed Cubase 5 and the crackles are stil there..

I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the buffer settings in cubase and my new hardrive (or something!)

When recording vocals with the monitors turned up, I can actually hear the crackles being recorded! This is some frustrating shit,,,,,

Cool edit pro and wavelab still record perfectly, I just want to use cubase for the vst instruments and 24 bit multitracking, please help!

Thanks, Paulo

I've never used Cubase, so all I can do is guess. I can try to explain what the buffers are.

The audio has to stream at a certain rate (whatever the sample rate is). Think of it like a barrel with a hole near the bottom. As long as the water level is above the hole, the water will stream out without interruption. It makes no sense to try to keep the barrel full enough by adding a drop at a time, so a bucket would be used to get water and transfer it to the barrel. The size of the bucket would be your buffer size. Bigger buffers take longer to fill, but they can hold more data to feed the soundcard at the neccessary rate.

I think you're on the right track (i.e. an ASIO buffer thing), since the other SW works fine. It might be something weird with the card's ASIO drivers, since Cooledit and Wavelab are probably using MME or WDM drivers instead of the ASIO drivers. Someone here might have had this problem and solved it. You might also try Steinberg's tech support.

hey dood...

when i wuz having a similar problem last month, it ended up being an irq conflict between my soundcard and some useless hardware. you would want 2 check in your device manager if your soundcard is sharing interrupt requestz with other devicez.

i'm not totally confident in this solution, since tha other appz work fine, but hey, worth a shot...
