Greetings funk masters!
Brand new to everything just about. Wondering if any amongst you use the Steinberg Audio Interface? What about Cubase? I just bought one for my bass and all I'm using it for now is to record my grooves over an audio file.

3 problems I've experienced so far
1. Constant clipping - I've adjusted volume and controls on both the interface and my bass but am still experiencing clipping. I figure I need to adjust the unit (input gain, mix gain, headphones) and my bass (treble, bass, front/back pickup volume)
2. I'm only hearing music in the right earphone on the playback...
3. Bass volume is really LOW on the playback. I'm sure there's somewhere I can adjust but not sure how

I figure all the interfaces and softwares come w/their own set of challenges...but if there's another that I should go back and exchange for, I'm open to doing that...

Any insight??

What Steinberg interface? There are many...

1. That doesn't seem right. Clipping where? At the preamp or in Cubase?

2. Some possibilities: Bad jack/adapter/headphones, wrong setup in VST Connections in Cubase, or you have a stereo track recording a mono source so it only has signal on one side.

3. That is not easy to answer because it should be so easy to figure out. :) Seriously, if finding a way to increase volume of a track is a question, then some reading is definitely needed. Not trying to be a dick but that is a really basic question.

You have to figure out where you are.clipping.

Recording level and monitoring level are two.different things, you might be turning down one thing when you are clipping the other.

Set the recording level in cubase so that the peaks are around -12 or so. Then adjust your monitoring level.

And he is likely playing bass to a mastered audio track which is likely as loud as it can be.

You will want to bring down the fader on that track.

Let's start from the beginning.

What audio interface are you using?

What version of Cubase are you using?

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach? lol

Love long walks on the beach with a cocktail in both hands...

Steinberg UR22 and Cubase AI 8 are what I'm using. I will figure the volume thing out soon I suppose, but it took me quite a bit of time to figure out how to actually record what I'm doing over the Stevie Wonder track. <-----------I really thought that part would be super basic but it wasn't...at least for me. Certainly a step up from Windows Live Movie Maker and the version of Audacity that I am mildly familiar with...:)

I will continue to tinker with the VST

LOL!

Good answer. :)

Ok, I can walk you through the setup and any questions you may have.

Well, not til tomorrow.

Post screenshots of your VST Connections. Both input and output.

Then another of you project window. Trust me, it will help to figure this out for ya.

What time zone are you in?

Just sneaking in to learn!
The UR22 has been "the forgotten" interface since its inception it seems? Apart from one favourable review in SoS I have read almost nothing about it and this is the first time any problems seem to have surfaced.

In contrast there have been shedloads of issues mentioned about a certain 2 in 2 out AI (sans MIDI!) and yet people still recommend it!

I shall be very interested in the development of this thread.

Dave.

I was going to buy a Focusrite if that's the one you're referring to...but probably not since the 2i4 has Midi...I think...

I thought MIDI wasn't that big of a deal as MIDI instruments have a USB connection?? Or is that not accurate?

I'm in EST...see screenshots...

You have your input set as the internal mic on your laptop. You need to change the driver to the asio driver for your interface and route those inputs to your session.

Midi over USB is a newish thing. There are.still plenty of midi instruments that only have the 5 pin connector. Besides, if you.were to daisy chain together a big midi rig, the 5 pin is the way to go.

Wait. Now that.I look at the output, where are you plugging the headphones in to? The computer or the interface. If you are.plugging into the computer, your interface isn't even doing anything.

Yeah I meant the 2i2. BIG! Debate about MIDI recently but I still think having the ports on an interface make life much easier. In any case, you rarely see MIDI INputs on controllers etc these days.

And, of course, Cubase was MADE for MIDI!

Dave.

In Cubase at the click on Devices>Device Setup...>VST Audio System. At the top of that window select the Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO driver from the drop down list.

If it is not listed the driver was not installed.

Couple things
- I made the change you suggested yet I'm still hearing playback in only 1 side of my headphones.
- When I'm plugged into Input 2 I hear on the right side. When Input 1 I hear on the left side...I may be on to something like Scooby Doo...
- The equipment I have right now includes: Headphones, Bass, Audio Interface. Nothing else (i.e. nothing plugged in Midi ports or Line Outputs)
- Also still can't figure out how to adjust volume on bass for the playback. Is that something in the 'Channel Settings' or somewhere else?

You need to set up mono inputs. One for the left input and one for the right. Then set up a mono track to record onto.

I don't have your interface, so you will have to read the manual to find out how the zero latency monitoring works on it. The controls for it will most likely be on the interface itself.

So this is what my VST connections should look like?vst_mono.webp

And is this what is meant by "set up a mono track to record onto" or does that require something else?

MonoTrack.webp

Yes, but the output bus needs to be selected as stereo out. Right there in your red box.

VST Connection buses look right now too.

:)

Yes, the answer to your questions is both. Now the vst connections is right and you have a mono track to record to. You need to set the channel output to main stereo out.

Oops Jim my beat me to it.
