Cubase and Guitars

Do any of you record guitars directly into Cubase?

..or would the ideal setup be to capture raw tracks on a stand alone 16track unit like a Yamaha, Korg or Fostex, then simply use Cubase for editing?

What is the most popular method around here?

Is it uncommon to record guitars with Cubase?

There are just about as many ways to record a guitar in Cubase as there are aspiring guitarists on the planet.

However, to answer your question, yes.

You can definately record your guitar into Cubase. Recording straight from the guitars' output, however, will give you some pretty dull results. If you have an amp with a line level output, or something like a POD, you can take the output from that into Cubase. Your sound card will also make a huge difference in the sound you record. If you're using something in the soundblaster realm, you might get a better sound recording to a dedicated 4, 8, or 16 track recorder that has some decent A/D converters. This is the weakest link in most PC based recording setups, and is the subject of much debate as to which one is 'best'. You can also mic the amplifier if you have the available equipment. This is perhaps the most commonly used method as it offers the greatest number of options for sound quality. If you don't have a good sound card and you do have access to another recorder, by all means use it. You can still import it into Cubase to arrange and/or edit.
