Hi All.

NOOB here.
I've just installed Cubase 7 Elements (registered and activated) onto my laptop running Windows 7.
Everything is up and running just fine but when Cubase is running no other program makes a sound. None what so ever.
As soon as I quite Cubase all the sounds are as they used to be.

Question: Is this normal or am I missing something.

Thanks in advance.

Try checking the box 'Release Driver when Application is in Background'.

In Cubase, Devices>Device Setup...>VST Audio System. Second line down on the right. :)

This is normal and happens because cubase and windows are using different audio drivers and can't use both at the same time.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Clicking the 'Release Driver when Application is in Background' has made some difference.

I just need to remember that you need to start the other app AFTER you have minimised Cubase. E.g. Start a youtube video and the sound is good. Fire up Cubase and the youtube video looses sound. Minimise Cubase and the youtube vid still has no sound. Refresh the youtube page and sound is back.

Makes it a little hard to watch youtube videos on how to use Cubase :-(

Is it just me or is it too much to expect that an application should not affect other applications on my PC. Especially if it is in background. It's not like Cubase is cheap!

Cubase needs to keep the audio driver away from other applications so that it does not lose connection. Trust me, that is an important thing.

You are best off running tutorials on a separate computer actually.

Actually, I just tested on my system, and I don't have any issue playing other applications when Cubase is open. Though I am using an external soundcard (interface). Maybe that has something to do with it.

What soundcard are you using?

No idea to be honest. Just whatever came with my laptop.

I'm only just getting started with digital music and I'm doing it mainly to make backing tracks for my RC300 looper station while I play guitar over the top. Dedicated music room under construction right now so I guess I'd better start looking at decent sound cards while I'm at it!!
I'll probably put a dedicated PC in the room. I'll ask around in this forum when I start setting up for soundcard recomendations.

Thanks for your help.

I have said it before but I shall.......!

Do not rely on just one computer. You can pick up a clunker easily good enough to run Youtube for very little money. I got an XP machine (about 2.6G IIRC) for TEN pounds at a charity shop.

A second computer is MUCH more than twice as useful as one!

And yes, Cubase is a greedy bstd!

Dave.

hahaha, thanks Dave. A second computer isn't going to be a problem. I'm an I.T. consultant, I think I've got about 5 lying around. I even develop apps on a MAC (which wont be going to the music room). Too many choices, if anything.

Hello Neild321,

If you still do not have an Audio interface, you might want to use ASIO4ALL on your PC, that might solve the problem with the ASIO driver and Cubase.

Best regards,
GN

Is this issue exclusive to Cubase? I have never had a problem playing music in REAPER, while watching a Youtube video and having another video playing in VLC or WMP. I can have sound from all these sources at the same time. I've never heard of the OP's problem, but everyone's making it sound like it's a normal thing.

I also do everything on the same computer, surf the net, record music, watch pron, you name it. I've never needed a separate computer for all these things, thank dog.

Naw, I think it has more to do with using the internal (non ASIO) soundcard of the laptop. I have no issues when using an interface with ASIO drivers.

ASIO4ALL is likely the doods cure. I'm with GN on this.

Also, if you are using an interface, you select it as the default in Windows as well, so there is really no conflict. I assume ASIO4All would be the same as it makes the internal soundcard appear as a ASIO device. I completely disabled my internal card in BIOS so as to never have any conflict, but that doesn't have anything to do with the OP's question... I'll shut up now. :)

Yes, IMExp' it is down to Cubase. This could of course just be down to the way we have worked over the years and the fact that we started off using Samplitude (SE8).

Then again, I am "old school" in that I fitted 2496 PCI cards quite early on and the received wisdom then was to disable On Board Sound. In this 3G XP P4 it is done in BIOS and in my 2core W7/64 machine in Device Manager. Thus, we have only had ONE soundcard to play stuff through. I have Cubase LE6 on the W7 PC and son liked it because it gave the very lowest latency with VSTi's. I have always left the "Release Drivers" box UNticked as I caused me problems, in any case, if Cubase is in use, nothing else is (or should be IMO).

Just one computer? Yes, that can work...Until it doesn't! If you get a crash or if you have to run a diagnosis (or read a tutorial as some one said?) you need a second internet machine.

Dave.

Yes it can. I've bee doing this on one computer for about 8 years. I'll let you know when any of those things happen. So far so good. . :D

Damn it. You're right. OK, well then, if you don't hear from me for a while, then you know what happened. :D
