So, Cubase 5 is out. On paper it seems to have some interesting new tools that would finally make it worth for me to upgrade from SX2.

Any impressions from anyone on this forum?

Been using it for a month or so, and it friggen ROCKS! All the BS that was wrong with SX3 is fixed, and Variaudio is worth the price of admission alone.

There is an update out that fixed most of the bugs. Couple left that I've noticed, but not too bad at this point.

Thanks for the answer NL5. Yeah, VariAudio and the rules-based automation.... actually the huge improvements in automation altogether is what I am sold on.

And the routing. All the stupid routing limitations are gone!

Is VariAudio steinberg's answer autotune?

Is there much of a learning curve if you have been using cubase 4 already?

Thanks

Yes, it is essentially an autotune like thingy - although I believe it is closer to melodyne.

I tried to learn how to use autotune correctly several times. In auto mode, I could get it to do mild correction OK, but I never figured out how to use the manual mode. Variaudio literally took about 3 minutes to fix an entire song, plus be ably to EASILY see where the pitch was at, and be able to move it manually if necessary. Like I said above, that one feature was worth the upgrade price. The routing benefits were just a bonus.

Thanks NL5,

I was thinking the same thing. The upgrade from C4 seemed cheaper than a pitch correcting plug in. I'm just worried about it being stable with this being the first version and all. I guess maybe I could run both if I'm to afraid to uninstall C4.

I haven't even updated my C4 because of the horror stories I have heard from some who had done the updates. I'm not that computer savvy, but have no problems recording with C4 at all.

Thanks again
Big Tom

if you upgrade from 4 to 5 you will loss your licence for 4. The upgrade version updates the dongle and makes it useless to work with 4.

Just a heads up if you have projects needing finished in 4 before you make the upgrade.

Won't C4 projects play in C5?

This freaks me out a little. I have some projects that were recorded in C4 that are just rough tracks and I like to follow the rough tracks while recording keeper tracks. If I have to finish everything in C4, it may years before I can update to C5.

And I can't work on anything new until I do the update.

Nope. The C5 license allows you to run all previous dongled versions of Cubase. You can have SX1,2,3,C4 and C5 all on your computer, all running off of the new dongle.

Yes. Or you can leave C4 on your computer and just buy the upgrade. That way you can run both.

Are you telling me I can route the output of a Group channel to another Group channel before it? That's one of the biggest gripes I have with SX2 as there are many times I will send the outputs of a bunch of groups to yet another group for buss volume automation for example, but there are times that I will add another group channel after that and will want to make that part of the "automation" group and can't do it w/o first reassigning everything to the last group... It's a major PITA.

I'm wrong about the license thing. I was remembering reading this:

"I put cubase 4 and 5 on the same dongle and need to move 4 to another computer how can i get them seperated. I have both dongles just need some help.

Simply use the LCC software to transfer the cubase 4 licence back on to your second dongle. However, if your cubase 5 was an upgrade to cubase studio 4 then you can no longer seperate them since the cubase studio 4 licence is removed from the dongle when an upgrade takes place.

Did you buy the full cubase 5 or an upgrade? "

That's where I was getting muddled, sorry for the confusion.

I'm pretty sure you can. I'll double check in the morning. Tracks are supposed to be routable to anywhere. Also, plugins can be drug anywhere! Who hoo!

I don't quite understand what you are saying here. Steinberg changed their policy. Now, anyone who has a dongle authorized for Cubase 5, automatically is authorized for all previous versions - whether you bought them or not.

I bought the full version, since it ended up being cheaper than the upgrade..... ;)

jumping in

Hey guys, I know I'm jumping in the middle of this, but I just "upgraded" from VST to 5 essentials today. I am really excited, and was wondering if anyone could give me a short list on the improvements made, and the learning curve I can expect. Should I get the learning DVD or a book? Thanks!

oh and another thing, what is the main difference between the full 5 and the essentials program besides track limitation to 64? Also, will I be able to use all my older VST plugins that were installed with my older Cubase program, or is all that lost? I know these may sound dumb- be gentle... its been a while guys!

instrument selection

I am unable to use the instrument selection as it does not open when selected.
