Cubase 5 on Mac G5

Hi Folks - old man here with new technology! Been playing Rock all my life - now decided to lay down some good stuff - bought Cubase 5 and loaded onto Mac G5 - Plugged in Fostex LR16 and mac will not recognize - never mind loaded files using memory stick into Cubase and played with the files - very nice! now trying to input new stuff direct into Cubase 5 but it will not recognise audio in....! frustrated

Welcome to the forums.

Ok, so your trying to make new recordings on your mac, using the fostex.

How are you connecting the fostex to your mac? It's a usb connection right?

If so click go to utilities <shift-apple-u> and open system profiler.

Click on USB down the left side and see if your device is listed there.
 
OK I have connected using USB I believe I can only send the folders for CUbase to use and NOT record direct - Im gonna need firewire for that (later) - so I put a powered mini mixer into the audio in and set up a new track and shouted into a mike for about an hour but the level meter in cubase would not twitch
 
Ok. I'm not intimately acquainted with this mixer but fostex site make it sound like you can record to it, and mix what's on it,
but not necessary record to a pc through it.

Is this correct?
 
BTW have always used a PC but my mate advised I get this mac G5 and I really do NOT know my way around it so when you say say click go to utilities <shift-apple-u> and open system profiler.

The Fostex LR16 is a nice piece of Kit it is Digital 16 tracks recordable onto its own hard drive and one can make a nice noise on it but it has its limits - this is why I bought (a lotta dosh) the Cube 5 so that I can have limitless possibilities - WHEN i can record onto it!
 
If you can access your LR16 files from the computer, then you don't need to check system profiler anymore.
Can you access them?

When you used pc were you able to record straight into your software through the LR16?

No - the LR 16 is a stand alone mixer and recording console - you can only send the folders to a PC or mac for enhancing - using flash drive or direct USB connection
 
When I connected the LR16 to my PC laptop it 'saw' the LR16 straight away - the mac ignores it...
 
Ah, ok so two problems.

Mac wont see lR16 as a storage device

and live audio straight into the mac isn't registering in cubase?

Is this right?

Correct - the little 2 channel mixer is plugged straight into the adio in of the mac - I used the mini mixer to give the signal some oomph but the mac ignores it

Let's take the storage problem.
Plug the lr16 into the mac via usb and turn it on.

On your mac, click on 'finder' in the dock at the bottom.
In the task bar along the top, click on 'go'.

Now click 'utilities'.

In the new window that opened, double click on 'system profiler'

When that opens, you'll see a list down the left side.
Click 'USB' in that list.

Do you see details about your ls16 in the main part of the window?

Just to be sure, have you expanded all the little arrows in that main screen? Just incase anything's hidden.

Also, is there anything listed as unknown device, or well,,,anything that looks strange?
 
No there is nothing in there that points to the fostex or unknown - not so fussed about that as I am about getting a signal into cubase. Some one said go in to preferences and change the sound input but the only one there is 'Digital in' - built in audio - someone else was saying you need Asio mLan.??? Some one else suggested loading garage band but I wanna use me Cube but I gotta get over these initial probs
 
Alright, fair enough.

Goin to Go > Utilities > Audio/midi setup

Will tell you exactly what inputs and outputs you have.

Tell me what you see there, and if you see 'built in line input', select it as the input device.
 
OK Lots here - from the top default input built in audio, ditto output ditto system output - interestingly the audio input lower down has a source window which is saying digital in BUT looks like a line in is selectable.......
 
Great.
In the source box, select built in line input. You may have several, I'm not sure.
If there are several, just pick the top one and we'll try that first.

I'm struggling to remember the subtle differences of tiger/leopard as I'm on snow leopard.
 
ok I will do this and fire up cubace and see if I can get the volume indicator to jump around back soon
