I finally worked it out - on a MacBook, the default location cubase downloads the VSTi's to is a protected one, so it sticks them in the downloads folder. The grief I have had to get them re-redownloaded and put in am unprotected destination has driven me made - it looks like they're installed but the registration doesn't complete. Finally sussed it, but got one (pad shop 2) working - but by tomorrow I will have forgotten the steps and I didn't write it down! It does work. The problem was the pad shop was there but no content and that was the grief!
