CRT or CPU Interference?

When I record, I am usually fewer than 5 feet from my CPU and CRT monitor. Although I have humbuckers on my guitar and bass, I still get an annoying buzz. If I turn my back to the computer stuff, the buzz abates substantially. I do not get the buzz using my microphone.

Query 1: Is this buzz coming from the CPU or the CRT?

Query 2: If from the CRT, would I eliminate it by buying an LCD monitor?

Thanks to all.

I get the same thing on my guitar when playing near my CRT monitor. Back off more from the monitor or just turn it off completely.

I don't think LCD monitors will cause buzzing or interference, but I've never owned one so I can't say for sure.

The easiest way to check if it is the monitor is to wait until you hear the buzz then turn the monitor off (as Danny mentioned) and see if the buzz goes away. I used to have this problem with all my guitars. I recently got a LCD monitor (not really for this reason, just upgrading) and I can now sit very close to the computer and not hear any buzz.

Getting an LCD should fix that.. I used to get all kinds of problems with my speakers fucking with my CRTs.. PLus, it'll give you a TON more desk space... I now have room to put a big old controller keyboard in front of my monitor, when I used to only have room for the usual computer suspects.

INterestingly I was going to post the same issue this morning. I have a new comp, though same old CRT monitor, and a newish guitar - buzz galore in all but 1 spot in the room. Didn't happen with the monitor, soundcard & same model guitar before last night.
The guitar is a semi acoustic with single coils - more prone that hummers I think.
Turning off the monitor works but isn't convenient given it's comp based recording.
I don't really want to spend the money on an LCD monitor & it goes against the re use, recycle etc philosophy & most of my gear is combbled together, recycled, 2nd hand etc. Also having just spent the money on an essential comp replacement (1999 motherboard finally carked it) I'm skint. Any barrier, screen that'd work?

tin foil? I know a guy that was putting tin foil between his speakers and CRT and it cut down on the problems with that... who knows..it could work for that too? I dunno... might have to break down and get an LCD... I couldn't go back to a CRT now if I wanted to... ahhh and talk about headache/eyestrain after looking at one too long.

If an LCD is out of the budget, just press record, check it's recording, then turn the monitor off until you've finished the take
