Hey folks! Ok, so I'm not exactly new to recording, but I was going back through all the projects I've done and ran across the first real recording I ever did. Real as in actually trying to make it sound listenable :D . So I figured, what the heck, I'll just post it and see if anyone wants to comment on it. It was my first time playing around with Reason and drum loops, and the keyboard was a friend's cheap Yamaha with a noisy headphone out jack, but all-in-all I think it's not too bad for a first effort...

The amazing thing about it is that it was initially recorded without any click track or metronome, and it was only AFTER it was recorded that we decided we wanted a drum loop along with it. It seems that for once in our lives, we were able to make it through a song without varying the tempo at all!

I already know that for a lot of the song, the electric track is too hot and can wash out the vocal track, but honestly I'm too lazy to go back and fix it right now :D

Feel free to comment on absolutely anything about it...the recording, mixing, the music itself...whatever....I just thought I'd throw it out to the wolves.

From listening through these small computer monitors, the vocal sounds pretty good. Real good in fact... The acoustic and piano could come up some more in the beginning. I'm not crazy about the drums. It sounds like you were playing a casio keyboard with your fingers. The groove doesnt really fit the song. The electric guitar needs some more presense in the mids...its sounds really "woofy" for lack of a better word and would be better served panned hard left.
The chorus vox kinda farts out, needs some compression for when the vocal trails off at the end of each phrase.
All in all, its a nice song, Id prefer a cleaner arrangement. Give me an acoustic guitar doubled then panned hard for the chorus, boost the excellent vocals, add some highs to piano and maybe a little percussion. Oh, by the way, Im a sucker for ebow...can never have too much ebow;)

Good job

Oh I'm quite proud of that ebow...it's one of the few things I can actually do well! :) The quality of the vocals just goes to show how the reputation or cost of a mic are of less importance than an accurate match to the voice being recorded. Those vocals were through a Beta 87 with no pop filter and a darn near flat EQ. All of that was tracked through the pre's of a little crappy Berry MX series 6 channel mixer into a SB Live Platinum card.

Thanks for the input! It has given me inspiration to go back and play with the track some more and see what I can really draw out of it.

sounds real good ..you have a good voice and tone...the song itself is pretty safe and forgetfull and done a million times over,,, i played it a few times over and enjoyed it!!

that ebow sound ,,i like. It has a lot of del amitri in it which is a good thing..and these guys write good songs in your style.

yeah cool.
