Did I hear you cough at the beginning!!??
I'd edit that out!!:p

Nice vocals. Works well with the feel of the song.
I'll agree the melody seems repetitive. Something to drive the song forward would be nice.
The introduction of other instruments would make thing interesting too. I like the idea of adding a piano. Taking submissions? ;)

PS chris - I haven't listened to your bass/organ version yet, so if mine sounds identical it's purely coincidental. :)
Well Alibish, it's obvious to me that you and I care more about this tune than our friend, Erland. :D :D (kidding). I definitely like your percussion better...and the organ. Nice bass sound too...dammit. Now I find myself getting competitive. I didn't plug the organ back into mine yet (ewwww, that sounds gross).

Your background vocals sucked wind, though. ;)

I finally got to hear it.....nice song Erland.

And Chris and Alibish........both of your versions are worthy additions. Of course it's not my song and we'll have to wait to see what Erland thinks. I'm very interested in his response since he apparently had no idea there would be other versions popping up this quick. hell, if I had time I'd throw one down.

what the!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let me just breath for a second.........

Oh yeah???? Well SCREW YOU TOO!!!!!

Oh, wait. That's probably some European saying that doesn't mean "really mad."

hehehehehehe

anywhoo... I was actually considering doing something with this tune too... :p maybe some piano... drums... acoustic...... ah... too little time. :p

I may even jump in on that "1.5 hour" challenge thingy...

Erland,

I love this tune! So moody. Big intense backing vocals would be cool.

Thanks
Justin

i really like this tune erland.

at first alibash your mix sounded weird, but i loved chris's...

but i love the bass work on alibash's...

so, both are really good.

and improvements on the original in my opinion. great performance erland.

i havn't heard you say lately if you actually got any new gear lately? i know the voice is 99% of the equation - but you got a great vocal sound on this one esp.

what's your signal chain these days?

long time fan here

Erland, I really admire your work.. but I'm DYING to know what your rig is like these days... I mean what do you entrust this vocal talent and finger-chops to to get your tunes down?
I'm stoked just listening to these tunes of yours. very emotional. very involved singing.

Thanks wes. I'd be interested to know what you thought was weird - I've still got a huge amount of learning to do when it comes to mixing, so any tips would be gratefully received.

I heard the song as a kind of "lost" REM number circa Automatic for the People. That's the sound I was going for, although I suspect I missed it by some considerable distance!

Cheers

7 24 keep em coming man!!! i swear you could produce a cd

what happened to all your other songs on nowhereradio.com?
nice Acoustics and great vocals as always!

Finally

I get a chance to reply. I have a computer and internet access with no disturbances. yes!

Chris I downloaded your work and I am blown away. You really have made it a song, a real song. I am so impressed that when i listen to it i do not even hear that it is my song but a song by a real artist. In the beguining, the spanish style guitar that gets better and better as the song progresses and the bass basically made the song along with the percussion which sounds oh so profesional. I love the way it changes and makes a true introduction to the vocal. I left a long space between the first verse and first chorus which was supposed to be a chreshendo on the guitar. You nailed it with the lead and bass!

The chorus is now a real chorus thanks to your vocals. They are great and work so well. I wish it was you singing the whole song instead of me.

I have two favourite parts. When you use the middle section really well and put a guitar solo in, great. However the part inparticular that blew me away apart from the very beguining introduction with the bass and percussion, is 3 37. You have been using some amazing backing vocals and then you do this part that I wanted to add too! almost minor key. but then after this you do some amazing ooh ahhs (3 47) that for me makes the song. Just perfect.

So well wow and thanks for getting involved. In my head I have certain ideas that i would love to do. You basically exceeded my expectations so thankyou.

talk to you soon

Ablish.

Man how come we never met last year when I was in Edinburgh. We could have done some wicked stuff because i think i was only 45 minutes away. Anyway, i listened to your version second after listening to Chris for an entire evening and morning because I could manage to download his without being cut off by familly. Anyway, a fantastic bass that drives the entire song was enough to blow me away but this great organ. Wow. The sound you get is so professional. Even the shaker sounded georgeous. The song sounded almost like a beatles tune. I loved it but i was not too hot on the pitch change in my voice.

I notice the bad things about me singing and when you changed the vocal for me it drew more attention to it. Your never happy with your own voice and so I didnt like to hear it, i could hear it too much. argh. Anyway, I am so happy you enjoyed doing it becasue I sure enjoyed listening. You made it a propper song basically and I love that. Thankyou.

Erland

:)

Lt. Bob - thank you very much. I'd love to hear what you could do with this one. A wee bit of sax could be very cool.

Erland - glad you thought my changes were OK. Seriously, if you're ever in the real capital ;) I'd love to do some music. Your voice is so good, and I love your writing, so it would be a pleasure.

I'm pleased (and amazed) you like the organ sound - it's one of the sounds from Sampletank Free, drenched in chorus to cover up the obvious looping. Looks like I got away with it!

I probably shouldn't have shifted the pitch of your original, but I'm just lazy and I couldn't face re-tuning my bass and acoustic. I don't think it's too bad, but you can certainly hear some pitch-shift artifacts.

I love your vocal, though. Maybe a couple of bits could be re-tracked, but it's pretty damn good already. Your voice has the kind of sound that means wee variations just sound cool. With my voice, (not so) wee variations sound, err, less than cool. :(

I just loved Chris's vocals - he's such a good singer, and he's got a great ear for harmonies.

Cheers

Erland, thanks for the very kind words, but you need to understand something, if you don't already. The language I just quoted is utter nonsense. Anybody who knows ANYTHING at all about music knows that you have an absolutely unique gift in your voice. With you, it's not about equipment, it's not about production, and, in my opinion, it's only partially about the tunes you write. It is your voice. I love your songs b/c of your voice...PERIOD. I've listened to "Letter from NY" probably 100 times, and I honestly can't tell you what the song is about...but your voice is an instrument that comes along so rarely. Man, I'm not gonna' gush anymore about it...and you needn't reply. I honestly think you could improve your writing (and will over time), but it's secondary right now. DON'T EVER let me see you type something like that again, (imagine me shaking a finger at you...LOL). Okay, 'nuff said on that front.

If you're interested, I did about 4 more mixes since the one you downloaded, and I'm happy with the very last one, which is up right now. I retracked the bass using an electric blended with an acoustic, and I fixed a couple of lopsided harmonies...But it's probably stuff only I'll notice. I'm keeping this one forever.

Thanks for sharing your gift.

(and more than anything I added, I loved Alibish's Organ <----- whoa, that could TOTALLY be taken out of context, at least, in THIS country :D ).

I added the original to my HomeRec list... (like that's a shock :p)... I really dig this one, and I'd actually like to put some accompaniment to it, but I don't know how well that would turn oat, so I'll prolly just pass. Maybe if I can figger oat how to mic up my kit, I might throw some drums on it...

For the record, though, both of the "adulterated" (;)) versions aren't bad at all. I don't think either of em "ruined" the tune in any way.
