On my sound card there are slots for a joy stick, green (speakers), pink (mike) blue(?line in?), blue (cd or cassette recorder).

I can't find anything that explains the exact use of the slots above. I want to record from a CD to a tape deck with rca plugs using my 8250 Dell XP system.

I am looking for easy as pie explanations of exactly what I can and cannot connect to each of the slots.

I would appreciate a comment, a URL for tutorial, etc.

The speaker jack is just for that. The card has a built in amplifier for the speakers.
The mike jack is used for vocals.
The blue line in is for Dats, cassette, minidisk for playback and recording.
The Blue line out should bypass the internal amplifier of the soundcard and goes to powered speakers or an external amplifier for audio output.
Of course the Joystick port is for a joystick. You can also use the joystick port for midi with a midi joystick adapter.

Hey, thanks much.

The blue slot. I assume it is "line in". Therefore when "playback" is mentioned, then this means to play a tape from the tape machine through it to the computer. Further, when "recording" is mentioned, then this means to play a tape from the tape machine and record it to the hard disk in the computer.

So,

It is "line in". It receives signals for use within the computer. It send nothing out. Right, or should I just say, "obvious". It's just
when I see "play/record", I get confused. Again, what this means is that it is "line in" and I can play it on the computer, or record it to the hard disk on the computer. BUT
if I want to record on the tape machine, then I must get the signal from a "line out" slot on the sound card.

Have I got it? Can I go to the second grade?

Thats right. Thats the source. Playback will always be an out. Like the speaker out on your soundcard.
